Question About MWEB Gaming on Local Servers

openweb 768R if i recall. Thou i think it go's through vodacom/mtn-ns

What is like? good pings and can i download 170gb?

I cant say, i havn't used it. But from what i've read its lower contention ratio's so pings should be better, and apparently shaping is a little bit less on p2p related items. 170gb ? that is not really much. And im not a bandwidth hog.

10ms? I know its been a while since my Do3 days but I am sure that was consistently in the 30s. So they've improved their network by some 66%?

Lol. If you live on the exchange and servers you'll perhaps get that:)

If you live in the same city, there is no reason (other than congestion) why you shouldn't get 10ms pings. This obviously does not apply to MWeb users living outside Joburg (since traffic is now centralised...)

Here's a (partial) tracert from 2009:

Code:
Tracing route to bug.egs.uct.ac.za [137.158.102.61]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
  2 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms dsl-245-128-01.telkomadsl.co.za [41.245.128.1]
  3 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms wblv-ip-lir-1-gig-4-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.8.190]
  4 9 ms 9 ms 8 ms 196.43.25.206
  5 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms ge0-3.br2.cpt1.za.mtnbusiness.net [196.7.8.206]
  6 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms srp1-0-0.gw1.cpt1.za.mtnbusiness.net [196.31.249.66]
  7 9 ms 9 ms 10 ms vlan10.hr1.cpt1.za.mtnbusiness.net [196.30.176.36]
  8 11 ms 10 ms 9 ms cpt-br-tra-r1.frogfoot.net [66.8.22.58]
  9 10 ms 11 ms 9 ms cpt-acc-agg-carp.frogfoot.net [196.1.56.58]

Local gaming servers should be pretty good, and International is probably the best I've experienced from any ISP I've had with my 4mbps adsl line.

I physically noticed a good speed increase when going from Afrihost -> Mweb on international.

As for local, I'd say you cant go wrong with mweb, pretty much most SA ISP's will give you a decent to good experience with local servers

Friday and Saturdy pings were fine (20-30ms) , right at this moment its crappy (200-250ms). So as i said previously , it has its highs and its lows regarding latency.

It's unstable. No doubt about it.

I had nice 50ms and lower latencies on the CS1.6 (IS gaming servers) this morning and early afternoon. Now I'm lucky if my ping goes below 200ms! Its appalling to say the least.

I've now gone and placed my router in Bridge mode so that I can dial both Mweb (384kbps uncapped) and IS Local only accounts simultaneously from my MikroTik RB750 so that I can play games with decent latencies again...

yeah, getting 80-90ping average in QL just tested it 5mins ago.
