Question about the Democratic Alliance

It was a protest vote more than anything else.

Why did the majority of coloureds vote for the brand new spanking with no political track record ID and not the DA ???.

I think it was because of a perception that the ID was "their" party to stand up for coloured rights since the ANC and DA frankly don't seem to care about them.

Next election they will stay away as usual with only the commited ANC and DA supporters pitching up to cast their votes and I reckon their is more ANC aligned ones than DA ones.
The community of Tafelsig voted for a person who works with them on a daily basis. Shervil Arendse is known and respected in his constituency.
He couldn't stand as the DA candidate to start off with as that position was taken already by a person named Botha. From what I heard this Botha was offered the position by the DA when in actual fact Arendse was the person that was doing all the work on the ground. Arendse wasn't too happy going with the ID, but was forced to do so as there was no other alternative at the time.
The other ID candidate in Ward 66 in Cape Town is in the same position as Arendse. He is known and respected in the community, but the DA put another candidate forward who was not known that well to the community.

In one sense I am glad the DA lost those 2 Wards. Tafelsig and Ward 66(Ottery/Montague's Gift/Parkwood).
They should chose their candidates more wisely.

Some Ward Councillors are just in it for the job/money and the community comes second or third. The only time you see their faces is on the placard boards when they need your vote.

Was he not in court the other day ???.
No.
His wife was in court.
She has admitted her guilt and is going to pay the R5000 fine.

So when is the next crossover window ;).
September next year.

Unless the constitution can be amended?
The ANC is considering the DA's suggestion that this practice cease and it be removed from the constitution altogether.

No. That was his wife => news24.com

Although, I see now it was him and his wife. Perhaps this is what BTTB meant when he said the DA should choose their candidates more carefully.

The floor-crossing double-crossing is a game played by both the ANC and DA. AFAIK it is only the ID (or maybe ACDP) that have said they won't accept crosstitutes.

Being a non-DA or non-ANC counsillor will become potentially very lucrative in the next floor-crossing window.

So you support this highly unethical behavior? Figures...

Unethical .... get off your high horse ... in most Western democracies a representative can cross the floor and become either an independent or join another party and some have done so.

I'd rather have people voted in that are beholden to their conscience and voters than a sticking to a discredited party line because they might be kicked out of their position if they disagree with decisions made by a select few in Luthuli house.

Our current setup is nothing but a expensive rubber stamp for decisions made by others.

Another Peter Marias :).
It seems the sort of coloureds the DA gets onboard are rather flawed ;).

IMO if you do not agree with a particular party then you should resign.
Crossover is resigning with no risk to your salary.

Shervil stood by his wife in court like any other husband should.
It is his wife after all. She was charged, not him.
The little episode has cost their family the R5000 fine plus they had to pay back he R8200. A total of R13200.
Let that be a lesson to all people in Public Office.

>What if they were married Out of Community of Property.
She then would essentially have been entitled to claim on her own financial status?
But I think she fudged the books, so then it doesn't count. I suspect the questionnaire for the Welfare Grant asked for their joint incomes and she only filled in her income?
This is a Welfare Grant and it is clear they are not in need of Welfare.

Perhaps?

But I think The Community of Tafelsig voted for someone that actually works with the community. I have heard good things about him through the grapevine.

But yes like all politicians the power goes to the head after a time and they lose focus of their position in the community and what they are supposed to be doing.

Isn't this what Arendse did immediately after the elections? I seem to remember that he was elected as ID, then disagreed about alliance with the ANC so resigned and stood in the by-election for the DA. I respect that.

Floor-crossing is unethical. A councillor or MP or elected as the representative of a party and their set of policies. By switching they are betraying the wishes of the people that voted for them. I would think that (except in cases like Arendse above) by the time you've reached the point where you are standing for a party in an election, you are okay with their position.

Only when the DA refuse to accept floor crossers, will they have the moral high ground on this issue.

Yes.
Correct.
He resigned.

I suspect he got no salary for the period he was not employed.
But, it is likely that the DA gave him money to see him through until he was re-elected under the banner of the DA.
I heard as much through the grapevine.

You seem to confuse a proportional voting with a plurality voting (first past the post) system.

Sounds more like a 'running away' mentality if you cant deliver on promises made in order to get votes in the first place, i.e. "Vote for me, I will make it all better"

"Oh well, lets try somewhere else" ....

Conscience = $$$?

The DA has lost credibility, we'll see how it erases the "minority interests" party tag.

You should be happy for the DA Angelo - perhaps you should even consider supporting them - can you imagine the cesspit this would be without them? Nobody would question party line (much as yourself) - while 55+ die around you daily another 150+ get raped and 600+ die of AIDS - wonderful government (not)

(can you imagine if gub actually tried to do something - bhahhahah)

(blind as a bat without similar comprehension)

(and what's with the sig - or is it only affirmatively applied?)
