Question for Camera Guys

Ok, so methinks I'm going to buy a DSLR camera with a kit lens to start. Now... which one?

I just bought the 400D bundle from makro. Im pretty happy, as far as i know thats as cheap as you'll get it locally. plus u get a 2gig memory card at least. You can flog the printer for some cash then. Pitty theres no other goodies like a bag or tripod.

Been looking at the Olympus E-510. Looking real good, especially with the two kit lenses.

Ye, i read a review that rates it pretty high but i think for a first time buyer its really much of a muchness, they all good and it comes down to finding the best deal that fits in your budget.

Not a bad bundle - esp if you're in the market for a new printer . . . . or know someone else who is :)

There seems to be a derth of 2gb cf cards in PE for some reason. Everyplace I've been to so far has plenty of 1gb (too small) and 4gb (too big) - either that or they're asking r600 for them. :(

What do you think of the four thirds system?

Hence all the China pictures - I see :) I'm hoping to visit later this year. When's a good time? I dont' want to catch the heavy tourist flow but I'd like to go before it gets too cold. I realise it's a pretty big place though - looking at Hong Kong and Chongqing areas.
PM sent - not going to derail the thread any further.

Well I read up a bit about it, it seems the mount is different so there is a limit on the lenses. There are both advantages and disadvantages.

That's an even smaller sensor, if I'm reading this diagram correctly. Unless they're using far superior sensors (I doubt) wouldn't that imply the same downsides to the APS-C size sensors relative to full frame are even more pronounced?

Yeah - its a more densely packed sensor.

Well, I decided to go with the Sony A200, now waiting for the shops to get it. Hopefully next week.

Pooky, are you buying in S.A. or from overseas? How much do you expect to pay?

One thing I do like about Sony is the Zeiss connection - on would hope they would draw on that connection for their DSLR lenses.

I'm buying locally. Was quoted R6999 for the camera and the kit lens, plus a vertical grip I think.

that's a really good local price if it includes the vert grip. The Sony vertical grip is the best in the entry DSLRs as far as the reviews go...

Why? Zeiss/Canon/Nikon/Pentax..... make horses for courses.
Sony's Zeiss connection is great... to a point. There is only one Zeiss DT lens in the stable (all the others are designed for 35mm or full frame), so while the lenses are awesome you don't get to use them for what they've been designed (this is really obvious at the wide end of the zooms). So with the 1.6x multiplication on the current cameras, great lenses like the newly announced 24-70 T* F2.8 are slightly wasted. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08013002sony70300zeiss2470.asp

However, Sony do seem to have a plan to use the Minolta technology and lens heritage that they acquired - At PMA they announced a 24MP, stabilized Full-Frame CMOS sensor which will go into a high end camera within this year. That Zeiss 24-70 on a Full frame body would be fantastic! http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08013001sony35mmcmossensor.asp

I prefer to see this as a camera problem instead of a lens problem. :)

I'm not a fan of BoB, but has anyone seen the Nikon D80 with the crappy 3 lenses for about 12k? Is that worth it?

Makro says its 10mp and 6mp

Also, see above for the four thirds discussion.

Is this for your mum? Does she like the feel of it?

There are two cameras. Olympus E-400 digital SLR = 10mp and the Olympus C-505 digital = 6mp as I see it.

It's for my mother. She's been talking about taking up photography for a while. She doesn't know much and I know even less :D. Just saw this ad in the last hour or so.
