Question for Camera Guys

So would it probably be better to go with a new one from local dealers?

Not necessarily, however, IMO that particular deal isn't worthwhile.

What are the Rebel XTI Canon cameras? I've never seen that before. And bump for my previous post.

The Rebel XTi is the US branding for the EOS400D.

And sorry - never ordered online from 42nd Street Photo. Have you compared prices with B&H?
Point and Shoot.

Although she is thinking about getting into photography seriously
There are some pretty decent ones out there in that price range - I got the missus a powershot A560 (for under r1k) for xmas and she's happy with it.

carderne, if you get a 400D from Japan (if I'm not mistaken) it's called a "Kiss-X" - a bit like some of the cars in South Africa...

You're right about that deal not being worthwhile but I would not recommend having a guarantee that is not applicable in SA. The saving can't be worth it unless you have someone in USA bring it with him/her. Am I right?

You must tell me when next your mom is coming from USA. I want some stuff. :D I'll drive down to PE for that. :D

Thanks guys, I think I will just buy it from a local dealer, the actual shop, seems the best way. Now, is the 400D the way to go?

I'm in two minds about that - the guarantee only covers against manufactures faults so if a camera was known to be reliable I'd still think the risk was worth it.

With shipping the 400D kit is $662 (under r4700) - probably still a fair savings even if you get hammered by customs.

All these posts have been about Cannon bodies and options. Any reason you are set on Cannon, their are other good brands too.

He did say he was looking at the A100 too (. . . and I did suggest he asked you for your impressions about it in another thread). :)

bwana, would it be possible to give us an example of a product you bought from the US and what you would have payed locally? You buy from B&H, right?

My EOS400D body cost $529 (r3800) from B&H - locally SACamera is selling it for R7790.

My Canon EF 70-200mm f4.0 L USM cost me $539 from B&H - at SACamera R8,099.00.

This makes me ill. I am tired of being ripped locally.

They don't have iPods at B&H, but 42photo seem reliable, so if/when I buy an iPod Touch, I think I'll get it there.
