if you have a customer with around 500 user base would you consider running linux based servers for the key features Microsoft is renowned for?

Samba AD and maybe even Zentyal.

As long as you can configure sane security, I don't see a reason not to.

Definitely would go Samba AD.. The great thing is, the MS AD interface can be used from a Windows 10 PC to interact with Samba AD and manage user accounts etc.. Even push GPO's if the user base is running Windows OS..
