I know this is theoretically but it would make an interesting calc. I want to calculate how many users submitting a ping to an overseas site at the same time would it take to fill the SAT3 cable because that in my mind would be the maximum amount of users that are uncapped, unshaped users we could have on the SAT3 cable. I know there is probably some capacity that have to be reserver for phone calls etc but for the purposes of this calc I want to exclude them. Any clever guys???

I'm not clever. But I was watching a TV program where they were discussing Web 2.0 and the under water cables..

The people arguing for the idea of shifting everything online were saying that, theoretically, the under water cable, at the moment, has no limit... ie: The capacity is irrelevant, due to the amount that it can handle. The problem is the actual router on each side of the cable that receives the data.

And this is not even taking into account the new Asian pipe that is being developed that can handle more data... What's more than infinite anyway?

And the rebuttal from the router makers was that the routers already available are not even reaching their maximum, and new (bigger) ones are already being created...

I have a sneaking suspicion Telkom are lying to us about capacity problems

If I am not mistaken that SAT3 has x bandwidth eg 32TB/s or whatever it might be.

The typical size of a ping is 32 bytes. My international pings on a SAIX account are around 300ms. In a second I should be able to use roughly 107 bytes. Divide bandwidth of SAT3 by 106.67bytes in TB (or whatever measure the SAT3 bandwidth is measured).

This made me think about a statement that if everyone in China would jump up and down at the same time, we would see an earthquake that would make Krakatoa look like a bit of a rumble.

How about we consumers embark on an organised "strike" - shutdown of the net... we all issue a "ping www.telkom.co.za /t" at the same time on the same day and leave it...

But how is this the amount of users that the pipe could support? Each user doesn't just ping 32 bytes in every day.

In any case, the capacity of SAT-3 isn't just for ADSL. International phone calls and all other internet lines go through there.
 
I merely answered the question with the confines of the parameters he had setup.
 
Well some one can do the maths but the capacity of SAT3 is 120Gb/s

Well it was and still is a hypothetical question. I also did say that I am ignoring the telephony portion required for the sake of simplification. Like kris860911 I also have seen the program about the routers and started to do some reading. When the original cable was laid 120Gb/s was the max capacity of the SAT3 cable according to the documentation. Currently however the max capacity has increased to 250Gb/s and I can only assume it is because of improvements in routers at both ends of the SAT3 cable unless they relaid the SAT3 and I missed it.

All I want to calculate is a rough number of users that we could have on that capacity. I used ping as I thought that would eliminate the question of connection type because even dialup can send a 34kb ping packet.

And then I would off course like to compare that figure to the current number of adsl users and we can maybe extrapolate from that current usage stats? Perhaps.

The size of the ping can be changed. I don't know what the theoretical max is. Windows ping is limited to ~65KB, but other progs&linux can do more.

If Telkom has even one decent techie then their admin software will dynamically block pings if the suddenly get a few billion.

@milomak: The pings can be sent a lot faster, plus one does not have to wait for the return if one just wants to flood it.

DDos on the Telkom site is probably a more effective idea, but less legal. One of those every couple of days is a surefire way to get attention.
