Question,i7 4690k but ddr4 ?

Hi i'm trying to figure out which motherboards are available which supports ddr4 on the new I7 4790k

only ones i can find are the socket 2011 boards ?

The x99 chipset can do DDR4. Its socket 2011/V3 that runs DDR4 and nothing else. Your cpu doesnt support ddr4.
 
Faster memory won't make the slightest difference outside of theoretical benchmarks. Rather add another 8 GB (total 16 GB) if you want to see a worthwhile improvement.

8gb 1333mhz

thinking of going i7 4790k
and 8gb (higher Mhz memory)

or should i wait on skylake ?

Honestly I would not upgrade. Since you have a 2500k - You can comfortably overclock it on a decent air cooler to at least 4.6gHz comfortably.

Add a SSD if you do not have one. It will make a world of difference.

Lastly add more ram. (Won't make as much of a difference as a SSD)

Nothing is worth the wait TBH. Every year there is a new bump in architecture. You will always be playing catchup.

If you go with my suggestion, your performance should be on par with Skylake. 2500k/2600k is the sweet spot in terms of performance to $ ratio, considering it's a fantastic overclocker.

At the moment Intel is more concerned with dropping the power usage, and a small bump in performance.

Also, there is not a big difference between i5 and i7 with regards to gaming.

If you do video production and the like then it's worth it.

My last upgrade was:

2600k running at 4.6gHz
16gb ram
256GB SSD

Upgraded from:

Quad Core Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
8gb ram

Basically I upgrade when it affects my productivity and there is a 40%> increase in performance.

Otherwise it's not feasible to upgrade. Even thou I have the funds - I won't really notice the performance difference.

My one recommendation is to get a SSD if you do not have one.

You have three choices:

A) Plop down about R15k for a Core i7-5820K, a 140mm AIO water cooler, a Gigabyte X99-UD4 and 16GB DDR4-2400MHz and don't worry about upgrading for another +-six years

B) Wait for Skylake and only spend about R9000 that will last you +-4 years before you consider upgrading again.

C) Buy a better cooler, 8GB DDR3-1600 memory, a newer PSU and overclock to 4.5GHz to enjoy another two years before you seriously have to consider an upgrade. (you can stick with your existing memory, but 1333MHz RAM makes for some funny ratios/speeds when you start increasing the BLCK value)

As for the question on DDR4, it does make sense and it is faster, but you need to start at 2400MHz and up if you want to see any actual performance increases in games or applications which scale with memory bandwidth. Battlefield 4 is one of them.

Skylake will also be pretty spectacular. I'm expecting overall a 30% jump in IPC performance alone (compared to Sandy Bridge) at similar clock speeds and having access to all the modern memory, connectivity and storage standards would be nice.
