Hi all,

So over the passed month, possibly longer since I only started monitoring it now, I have noticed something that I would like to get an answer to as to why this is happening.

My MWEB line has been nothing but ridiculous, with the following occurrences:

1. Trying to play The Division I almost always get a Delta/Mike error which is directly related to internet connection according to Ubisoft.

2. International sites take forever to load with gmail sometimes hanging. Local sites seem to work fine.

3. Usenet is barely existent on port 119, kinda expect usenet to be shaped to hell though.

4. Streaming is shyte ( Netflix, Youtube, Twitch )

Now my first thought was throttling. Logged into account and status is unthrottled so it's not that. Then I thought it was maybe MWEB doing upgrades or maintenance or something. I did check the Notice Board but nothing reported in my area but I gave them the benefit as I thought, Is it really updated live?

My next step I decided to register for a vpn account. Paid, installed and connected the VPN. Everything works without a hitch. My question now is, is MWEB doing some shady QOS/Shaping behind the curtains or are their backhauls just oversubscribed to hell because a VPN should not have such a big effect on my experience.

P.s I just tested now again. My Google Apps Admin panel wouldn't load. Connected VPN and all good again.

I had exactly the same experiences as you. I decided to move to Afrihost. Everything works perfect now. I think Mweb can't cope with the amount of subs they have, or they are just shaping everything. Have the same line speed now with afrihost than I had with mweb, but now everything just works.

Glad to know I'm not alone on this. I am probably going to move if this doesnt get resolved because a VPN is R750/year which shouldnt be needed.

Anyhoo, P2P and usenet I can understand if it's shaped to hell but if you have to do it to gaming/browsing then something is not right with the business.

Exactly, while I was with mweb (which was still 3 days ago) I couldn't even do proper 360p and sometimes 240p streaming on youtube without buffering. Now with Afrihost I can do 720p on a 2Mbps line without any buffering.

Had the exact same issues. Moved over to WA to test, everything works fantastically.

I had the exact same problem. MWEB did analysis and said they could not replicate my problem.

I finally got fed up, and left. Till this day MWEB has not admitted the problem is on their side.

Good luck, hope you come right. If not, best is to leave. your internet should just work, having to use a VPN should not be an option

Hi acidrain

When you were doing all test and trying to Game was there any downloads running in the background?

Can you please provide the screenshots of the tests you've done. I could not find anything on your account that would raise an eyebrow and last line query was September last year. Yes p2p, torrents etc receive the lowest priority on our network.

Yup I feel leaving seems to be the best option. I'm not too worried about the VPN part but I just can't handle the lady moaning about netflix not working... anymore.

What if a game is P2P based, would it be affected?

No downloads. Even if there were though, like I said turn on VPN and everything works again without touching anything else.

What screenshots are you referring to. Traceroutes/speedtests/pings? If so that's not going to help much because they show no problems but I will see this evening. It's like Speedtest and ICMP are specifically prioritised to fool us into thinking the problem is not mweb.

When streaming from YouTube, right click on the video and select "stats for nerds".

This should reveal a pop-up. Please take a screenshot of the values in said pop-up and share it with me.

Just for fun I signed up for a Mweb 100GB package. YouTube is buffer galore, torrents never go past the 3kb/s mark and international sites like bbc take ages to load. Speedtest reports full speed. So something is definitely wrong. Switched back to Afrihost and wola everything is running at full line speed. Was considering moving back to Mweb once upon a time. But no thank you.

HI Hummercellc.

For the streaming on youtube, right click on the video and select "stats for nerds".

With regards to torrents, they get the lowest priority and speeds are not guarenteed

Hi

Do you have any packages where p2p actually work ?

Kind Regards
