Help me settle an argument between me and a friend:

Say you have a 24 month contract. After month 24, if you don't upgrade, it becomes month-to-month, right? But my understanding is, you can still then upgrade your contract if you feel inclined to do so, after it has become month-to-month. My friend says that you will have to go through credit vetting again once it is month-to-month (payslips, bank statements etc) while I believe you just upgrade your line like you would have in say, month 23 or something.

We would like some clarity on this issue with Vodacom specifically, but I would assume it is the same across all networks anyway?

Month to month and can upgrade anytime, no credit vetting etc.. at least with Vodacom..

Yes from my experience the contract remains eligible for upgrade without having to vet again.

Complete hogwash.

If you dont do your upgrade, you will just be on a month to month basis. The upgrade will remain available until such time you choose to do it. Just keep in mind any benefits that was included in your last upgrade deal will terminate once your 24 month period is reached such as a reduced subscription or promo data bundles etc.

Or get tired of being contacted 10 time a day for the network offering some "special" offer and finally give in.

I know how irritating it is. But with a country like ours where penetration is of mobile subscribers are high, the networks are driving retention very hard to try and prevent churn. I have seen a very worrying trend with my corporate clients sending me cancellation requests and enquiring when other lines on their account contracts ending so they can cancel. That means one thing. Employees are being retrenched.
