My PC has become very sluggish lately and due to me trying to restrict excessive spending I'm looking at a cheap upgrade that'll give my PC's responsiveness a big boost, obviously I'm going with RAM.

I have an old MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard that supports max DDR400. My question is should I buy 4GB (2x2GB kit) of DDR800 or 1066 RAM to be futureproof (yes, I know the RAM speed will just be bumped down to 400Mhz by the motherboard anyway) or should I just buy a DDR400 kit?

I've got 2x1gig 1066 which has obviously dropped down to 800 - my recommendation would be 1066 & yes futureproof:)

ur motherboard doesnt support other than 400mhz. so u have to go for just another DDR400 mhz.
I don't think you read my OP.

I know my motherboard only supports a maximum of DDR400 but higher speed RAM gets underclocked to the highest supported speed of the motherboard, so what I'm asking is if it's worth the premium to just buy 1066Mhz sticks (which will work fine on my mobo given that it physically fits into the RAM slots, see post #4 for my 2nd question) and futureproof myself if/when I upgrade my entire system.

Gimme a quick quote there PP, how much would a 4GB DRR1 400Mhz kit cost me?

(assuming you even get 4GB kits in those)

You can almost buy an entry-level barebone PC for the price of 4x 1GB DDR400...

4 x R380 Transcend 1GB DDR400 = R1520.

I suggest looking for second-hand DDR RAM, plenty of it around.

I bought myself a 4GB pair of corsair XMS2 800 CL4, to my surprise my p5q motherboard sets it at 1066 cl5, my 1066 mushkins (which are more expensive) required me to set it at 1066 manually but it was unstable and I was forced to leave it at 800mhz to stop the BSODs.

In short I recommend the corsair xms2 800 cl4 kit because it does 1066 at cl5 and is cheaper than a 1066 kit.

If you have a DDR2 board, ja. :D

R360 is the cheapest brand new at accomp.co.za
Rather wait for a whole system upgrade. And i don't think DDR comes in 2gig sticks so u.ll have to buy 4x 1gig sticks.
Overall not worth it...if u really can't stand it just get it over 1gig(assuming u're on XP)

Damn, might as well upgrade my entire system then.

If you want good ram then go with the corsair xms2 800 cl4 kits, they can do 1066 on cl5 stable. I bought myself a pair of mushkin 1066s but they were unstable at 1066 and I was forced to keep it at 800 so I'm chuffed that my cheaper corsairs can do 1066 for less.

That would mean I'd need a new motherboard though.

On the plus side, I do ALL my gaming on my 360 now so I can save money and just use the onboard GFX so basically a motherboard and RAM will be all I need for a decent boost in performance.
