Quick Technical Poll

My inside contact tells me there is something wrong with the SDM.
Never heard of SDM, but SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) is the low level transmission network that everything (e.g. ATM, IP, Diginet, TDM voice) runs over. So if the ring that your exchange is attached to is giving hassles, it could be a cause.

In your opinion Roman, how do I present all of this to telkom?
Though one, getting technical with 1st line support aint gonna help. I would just explain to them that I am running latency sensitive (local) applications, and based on comparision to other ADSL links I've used, my service is not up to scratch, therefore they should investigate.

The dsl is sh|tty for me, its for everyone in Harties. How you play online FPS with a dsl ping of 150-176 for 384k users. Their first hop is 110ms. I dont think I mentioned that I have driven round and tested peoples dsl connections. Everyone connected to the Xanadu exchange is effected, and now added to that it seems the gateway is also at fault.

Im going to need telkom to grasp the gravity of the situation and do something.

Those who provided me their data here, would you be prepared to pm me you telephone number?

Not likely from me, I don't pay the phone bill, so I can't help, sorry ;)

Hi Peon

Uncle Aqox here, wazzup boet?

In a nutshell, diffrent DSLAM sites, use diffrent gateways to get onto the Telkom grid network.

I'm litterally 20km from you, and you're using a diffrent Gateway than i am.

I'm using 41.242.0.1, and so is eveyone else in Brits. Our DSLAM is connected to PTA, which is lightning fast i must say. Sometimes over the weekends, and early mornings, i had single digit pings to telkom ip's, as well as in HL2DM

Pinging 41.242.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 41.242.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=255
Reply from 41.242.0.1: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=255
Reply from 41.242.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=255
Reply from 41.242.0.1: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=255

So, Harties is connecting to a diffrent dslam router, i.e. sandton/krugersdorp - or closet town to harties, but not PTA! This dslam could be overloaded, and thus giving you poor speeds. It could also be the line conditions, fibre has lots of collisions, copper might be old, etc...

The more data you send to a host, the higher the latency becomes, because ADSL is Asynchronous and not Synchronous, like SDSL. On SDSL you have a reserved block of data that gets send to the dslam each time.

I cant open www.deviantart.com website no more, stupid telkom techies. i should become the CIO and mess them around with their general knowledge of routing. lol

Good luck

For deviantart to work just use this proxy:

cache.saix.net port: 8080

Well Mr Aqox, its good to hear from you again. Its been a long time.

The more feedback this post gets the more clearer it looks like our gateway seems to be struggling. Dude, its about 2 years now that this is carrying on. Its must end.

How to speak to the right person in Telkom who can fix this is going to be difficult. Thanks for your input.
