Quicktime 7 vs Quicktime X

For some reason, Quicktime X refuses to play some video files (all mkv) that Quicktime 7 happily plays.

Does anyone know why this happens or where to look? I was under the impression they use the same set of quicktime components.

update/reinstall perian?

This does my head in. I did it earlier - no luck. Did it now - it worked! That said, erlier I just hit the uninstall button in the Perian tool in system preferences. This time I re-installed the preference pane, and then installed again. Maybe something was hozed.
