Quiet PC

:D Then Vantec are using some ****ty fans. It actually makes the same noise as the old Gigabyte PSU I have lying here. Wonder how hot these PSUs would get producing less than 200W without a fan.

My old Thermaltake PurePower used to generate a lot of noise, which was fortunately drowned out by the whine of a failing 80mm case fan that I had and never replaced (which drove me mad)

As for the heat output, no clue. I'd probably just remove the fan and see, if I were in a position to easily replace components that died because of that :D

Tempting, but yes the PSU going from heat might be the end of more expensive components. Might as well just search for a good PSU with 12cm fan and fit a decent fan to it.

My colleague returned one of her PCs that she purchased from me. The 80mm fan on the cheap-ass Asus case had given in completely. Horrible noise. I hear the 2nd Asus case is doing the same thing. I hate cheap cases. :P

I love them, they take a lot of abuse and they're cheap to replace :p

Ran my Q6600 without the stock fan (heatsink only) for about an hour, highest core temperature was 74C :erm: I think I'll keep the stock fan plugged in for now, even though it's the noisiest component in that PC :D

Yup, they do, but the fans is just cheap and last less than a month.

Slightly toasty there. :D Was that under load or just idling along?

With my side fans off I've got the motherboard reporting 47C which is 10C up. Not sure where the mobo is reading temps from. I think it might be within the SuperIO chip which is not representative of any temp anyway.

Going to order the mCubed thing in January. Can then monitor my temps properly and control fans better.

Mostly idling (less than 10% CPU usage) along, which is consistent with my findings this afternoon that I can watch videos indefinitely on it but once CPU usage increases significantly I'd best have the fan plugged in :erm:

To be honest, I can tolerate a bit of noise for good cooling. But I draw the line at whining 80mm fans :D

How on earth did you manage that?

Quite simple, I just didn't plug the two fans in :p

Once the heatsink was installed I saw no reason to plug the fans in (the temperatures were very good) and after some considerable overclocking (600/1500/900 to 740/1850/900 for core/shaders/memory respectively) the temperatures are still under 65C under hours of 100% load :D

Same here, I don't mind "noise". I think it is more the type of noise that's the issue.

You need a fan controller which only switches the fans on at a set temperature. I'm looking to get that sometime.

Agreed. I can handle hum but not whine :p Then again, I don't switch off my PCs when I go to bed so I'd probably be driven crazy by whining fans

Van Der Hum is much better than wine. :D

I have tinitus as it is. Having irritating extra noises is what's driving me crazy.

Hmmm... where can I get some 2mm thick aluminium sheeting in CPT? Preferably Milnerton area (Montague Gardens, etc).

80mm fans are like the devil to me...heck, i hate anything smaller than 120mm.

I read a thread on OCN the other day. It was about buying normal erasers from a stationary shop and then cutting it up to make this sort of "padding" for case fans. The rubber will absorb the shock and there will be less vibrations and thus less noise. I'm pretty keen on trying this out soon

Or you could just buy some of those silicone rubber fan mounts or a the silicone rubber gaskets. :) Then you don't have to spend money on a sharp knife.

something i found a few minutes ago (old, but a good read)

http://www.overclock.net/faqs/117975-how-silence-your-pc.html

I suspended my drives as they briefly mention in this article. Unfortunately this means I can't put a fan in place and with no air circulation I went from a 29C drive to a 48C drive.

http://www.silentpcreview.com is a great place for info on silencing. It's also a great place to see how anal some can get. :) I believe there's some discussion in there somewhere about why clear fans are worse than normal black ones.

One thing I've learnt about case fans though is to never trust the spec sheets. Only way to find out if the fan will be quiet is to run it.

What they should really do with case fans is cut the blades off them and then measure the noise. :) Most of the annoying fan noise seems to come with the motor and bearing.

Won't a knife from the kitchen do?

Going to put some rubber on my fans later today, will see if it makes a difference
