So I phone a dealership for a specific car part, and he gives me a price. Turns out it is without VAT. Why would they do that?

Esquire doesn't generally sell to the public...
You know what he means - many of us buy for ourselves through our companies.
When selling directly to the public (retail), vat must be included. (by LAW afaik, can't find a reference)

I am talking about a major vehicle brand here. Certainly they don't only deal with other companies. I ordered a part after receiving the quote, only to be told on payment it was excluding vat, adding about R300 to the price. This annoys the living fck out of me.
