Hi all,

I have recently got a QX6700. I know these chips run hot, so i got myself a Zalman 9500 AT. I was wondering what is the best program that i can use to monitor the temps of the cores, and CPU itself?

I have an ASUS P5W64WS Pro Mobo. I checked the temps in BIOS, and it says its sitting at 70 Degrees Celcuis. Is this normal? the HSF is COLD to touch, so i dont know how that reading can be correct? The HSF is firmly on the CPU, and I'm using Zalman SG1 paste.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HWMonitor does the trick for me.

Your motherboard BIOS might be out of date. I noticed that a 2006 update to the BIOS changed accuracy of the CPU temperatures.

I'm going to update the bios to the latest this evening to see if it will help. I know 70 degrees aint normal. could the thermal sensor on the board be faulty? Cos i got the same reading with the stock Intel HSF.
 
I've tried CoreTemp. says its around 40 degrees, but the temps JUMP within 2-3secs to 80 when doing CPU stress test. that normal? thought temps would increase slower than that?

The idle temperatures do seem about right, but that large a jump in such a short amount of time isn't normal. Try reseating your cooler, just in case.

Ok, will have to get some thermal paste before i do that then. What is the max these CPU's should get to? dont want to damage the CPU at all.
 
oh ok. so wouldn't the Thermal Specification of 65°C be the temp of the CPU itself as a whole and not core temp? Maybe I'm being stupid. Thanks for helping :)

To be on the safe side, it's recommended to keep the temperature of your cores below the thermal specification. With a proper aftermarket cooler you shouldn't even reach 60C (reported by CoreTemp) under extended periods of full load.

The variance between different programs regarding a single "CPU temperature" makes it a bit difficult to judge, core temperatures are (in my experience) better.

I have heard of quite a few Core 2 range CPUs with defective sensors, so it's not impossible.

Hmmm, you actually want the heatsink to be warm as it indicates that it's pulling heat from the CPU...
 
A friend of mine has the same problem, but he still has a P4 3Ghz. I think the bios update should be your first option... When his pc is under load, the temps also jumps with 10-20c... We have reseated the cooler(intel stock), but this didn't solve the problem.

But seriously my qx6700 also runs incredibly hot even when not oc'ed so in the end i gave up and just ignore the temp readings and trust that it will throttle when needed :)

Looking back it was a real bad buy
 
Well i downloaded Hardware monitor, and my temps are as follows :
Core #0:57 Degrees C, Idle
Core #1:59 Degrees C, Idle
Core #2:55 Degrees C, Idle
Core #3:55 Degrees C, Idle

with CoreTemp my temps are as follows:
Core #0:42 Degrees C, Idle
Core #1:44 Degrees C, Idle
Core #2:40 Degrees C, Idle
Core #3:40 Degrees C, Idle

Which program shall i be looking at? There is a massive difference between the temps of both programs...really confusing. Please Help. lol

Core Temp all the way it is programmed with Intel internal specs. So you will not find a beeter programm than Core Temp. If you still have warrenty on the CPU --> RMA.
 
Gixxa, that is normal temps for the qx no rma will be accepted especially since this is probably a 3 year old chip and they have not been manufactured for a long time.

Core temp and real temp are the 2 best for core 2's
