QX6700

Even if it is 3 years old you can still ask Intel if they might RMA it I mean the thing costs how much? $1000? I remember with my old AMD FX-57 they RMA'ed after 3 years because it just fried up under water cooling and no OC.

Well I have found a solution to the problem. I did A LOT of research about these chips and came across CPU lapping. This CPU is over 3 years old so warranty had expired and what not. So I did the whole lapping process last night and was AMAZED by the results, the results above as before the lapping so I'll just post new results.

Lapped Results:
Core #0:27 Degrees C, Idle
Core #1:29 Degrees C, Idle
Core #2:24 Degrees C, Idle
Core #3:24 Degrees C, Idle

I did not put up load temps before, but here they are:

Load temps before lapping:
Core #0:89 Degrees C, Full load
Core #1:90 Degrees C, Full load
Core #2:83 Degrees C, Full load
Core #3:85 Degrees C, Full load

Now my load temps are as follows:
Core #0:68 Degrees C, full load
Core #1:68 Degrees C, full load
Core #2:57 Degrees C, full load
Core #3:58 Degrees C, full load

These temps were taken after running Prime 95 for 30mins.

I did notice while i was lapping how uneven the CPU surface was, the sides of the processor were MUCH higher than the center of the CPU, so the HSF wasnt able to transfer the heat properly. So after lapping the CPU and HSF its making proper contact and cooling this normally hot chip to much cooler temps, :)

Thanks again for helping before all, greatly appreciate it :)

Archi3 :D

I lapped my q6600 bumped it up to 3.0ghz, slapped on a coolermaster V8, dropped my temps by 20C. I run cooler now than I did stock! best R800 upgrade ever ! The lapping took me about an hour to do, man was mine uneven - same as Archi3. Under stress I might reach 60C - with prime or intel burn test. On a cool day I idle at 35, on a hot day 40, but never go over 60! My PC kills Crysis - pleasure to play now!

Gotta love Google and all it offers :) Think Intel should Lap all their CPU's before they ship them ;)

How did you guys lapped the CPUs? I have never seen this been done before and are curious on how you go about to do this. :D

Get a peice of flat glass, fix some water sand paper - 800-400 grit to it (it must not move around on the glass) take some water, add a very little bit of soap to it. Dab the water on to the water paper. Turn CPU chip face down onto the water paper. Gently and evenly slide the chip up and down the water paper (you must be sure to make the pressure evenly distributed) . Repeat continuosly (sometimes replacing with new water paper when it is not taking any more of the silver coloured back). Continue untill you have a smoothe copper back! Dry chip off !

was very easy, allthough i did not lapp the heatsink (was awkward to hold) so I didnt do it (didn't want to sand it unevenly) - but it looked fantastically flat anyway - could see how it had been milled flat already!

Just take your time, dont rush it. and make sure that your chip is 100% dry before putting it back on the board. I also did not go to the "mirror" finish, as long as it is smooth and even!

PS. my chip was out of warranty when I lapped it, cause there is no going back after - warranty will be void!

A friend of mine has the same problem, but he still has a P4 3Ghz. I think the bios update should be your first option... When his pc is under load, the temps also jumps with 10-20c... We have reseated the cooler(intel stock), but this didn't solve the problem.

I gather this is the Prescott ?? also known as the presshot! common problem - the CPU runs hot, google it.
