R&R (the drink)

So I've never been to Mozambique - have been to Nam if that counts but their thing is beer and Jägermeister - and weirdly have a craving for this R&R thing.

Been to Makro, they sell Tipo Tinto for R170 a bottle but that's a bit more than I want to shell out for something I may or may not enjoy.

For you folk that frequent Moz or who have experimented with rum and raspberry, can one substitute the Tipo with say, Cappies Spiced Gold or Red Heart Spiced or something similar?

I've also read that our Sparletta Raspberry isn't quite the same as what they get in Moz; Is there a better SA substitute than Sparletta?

Also, what is the mix ratio? I've read that the proper R&R mix is 1/3 Tipo to 2/3 raspberry, so to start out a triple shot rum to the balance of the glass (fill to the top with ice first) raspberry should be half decent?

R&R is a great drink best enjoyed in Moz, no you can't substitute Tipo Tinto with anything else. Our Sparberry is close enough.

Here is a video that will show you the mix ratio

The original Tipo Tinto sells for R 20 a bottle in Mozambique.

I actually have an original left over still from when my Brother bought me a crate from there. Wait, let me go take a picture

You can get it at makro or even pre mixed with raspberry

Yup, but at R170 its a bit more than what I would like to spend.

I got hold of a bottle of Sparberry and mixed with some Spiced Gold and it’s actually not bad.

Would prolly invest in a bottle of Tipo Tinto to try the original.

Rum on it's own gross
Sparletta on it's own gross

The two together ..... wtf is wrong with you lot!

R&Rb is best had in Moz. Our Sparberry is not a substitute for their raspberry. It just tastes better down there. Anyway, once a year is fine when you can throw your name away after a few Fernando R&Rs. As for Fernandos, that place has become a dump since the man passed away.

You can't substitute either in an R&R..

Needs to be Tipo Tinto and it NEEDS to be their Raspberry drink....

One word... Heaven :)

I only drink Rum and Raspberry as of the last year or so.

I do however drink Redheart and Raspberry if I don't have any Tipo Tinto any more. That bottle in the foto is/was the last, was only about 3 drinks left in it so I drank it yesterday after posting it :p :D

You can get R&R in 340ml premix from SPAR's bottle store. Saw some yesterday at Norwood. Didn't check pricing but I thought it was pretty cool.

R&R is the perfect accompaniment for a summer braai. Grab a couple of bottles of Tipi Tinto .. a few bottles of Sparberry.. fill a few jugs with ice.. mix it up and let ppl help themselves throughout the afternoon.. My perfect mix is about half a bottle of rum per 2litre jug.

R&R doesn't taste quite the same here in SA, I don't even bother, for me it's a Mozambique drink best enjoyed on holliday.
As for mix ratio, Fernando's pub in Ponta divides 1 bottle of rum between 4 glasses, then use 1 can of raspberry just to colour the 4 drinks red. Start off with triples and take it from there.

Last time I was in Moz I also got introduced to T&T, same as a R&R but they replace the raspberry with tonic water, it's quite nice if you are gatvol of the very sweet raspberry taste even though the tonic probably have the same amount of sugar.
