I worked for companies that succesfully installed and used SAP. Not being in IT, I can only think it was a people related problem and not SAP itself.

How much did the consultants charge, did no one question the amounts?

SAP can be a finicky beast. People also tend to confuse SAP ERP with the other SAP Products.

This is a pretty narrow view. I have numerous family and friends that have local and global IT capability, some of which have successfully moved abroad. Unless you're talking about public sector, there I might partially agree

I was having a conversation with a fellow Souf Effrican about this just the other day. I’d hire South Africans all day long. rvZA, should not be taken seriously. He is the epitome of “hot takes only”.

you get what you pay for, and picking some local company without a lot of experience /fallback/options can cause things to go this way.
glass half full kind of way, somebody needs to unpack what went wrong, lessons learned ect ect before passing judgment on who is to blame.

rvZA just slanders anything to do with SA. He's just a dimwit so you really need not pay attention to anything he says. I know numerous people who have gone to work at Microsoft (redmond), Amazon, Facebook etc.

Just for serious comment, SAP as a platform is not bad but it's just a framework. The problems tend to exist in the translation of business issues to SAP and the various consultants.

Personally think it's overpriced.

SAP is not the problem. It is what it is. The largest companies in the world use it and trust it. I agree, you need to get the right consultants. At the end of the day, SAP is no different, you get what you pay for. Hire s**ty consultants and you get a s***ty platform.

There is a mythical beast called "Vanilla SAP" that is apparently roaming out in the wild, Ive never had the pleasure of seeing it myself. Often people try to customize SAP too much too quickly and then they get their fingers burnt.

The best project Ive worked on had the basics in place using an industry standard template and then had the system evolve over time as they added on more SAP products and functionality.

SAP is good when it's live but it takes 3 years and is a total **** show the whole time

SAP is a swiss army knife. If you stuff too many tools into it it becomes a bit unwieldy
