R10,000 laptop

Hey

I have a budget of R10,000 for a laptop. Thats the ceiling of the budget.

Basically the main thing I want is a built in hsdpa modem.

What do you guys suggest?

Are the built-in modems as good as the usb modems?

Have had much experience with them....
 
yea i havent had any problems with the built in modems on our corp laptops, we mainly use the HP probooks for this or you can look at the Dell laptops. Nice thing with the Dells is the onsite warranty, we've had a few of dells which had mobo or hdd problems and a dell techie comes to your office and replaces the faulty hardware onsite... :)
 
One thing to be aware of when choosing a notebook with an internal modem - make sure the modem supports the network you plan to use. E.g. My previous Acer notebook had a built in 3G modem, but it didn't support Cell C's HSPA+ network. The modem did not support HSPA at 900mhz, only at 1800mhz and 2100mhz. This should be less of a problem nowadays, since most new modems are tri or quad-band. Also, it's very difficult to obtain such information before buying. Most of the time it isn't even available on the manufacturers website, and you have to ask other users of the same laptop if it is supported.

Check here - there are many HP ones with 3G below R10k (prices are excl. VAT), a few Acer ones, and I think 1 or 2 from Dell. We buy all our PCs from PC International, and I personally recommend them. Hopefully you're in JHB, otherwise you can just pay to courier it.

Personally, I'd vote for the Thinkpad T420si, being a very nicely balanced notebook for business and professional use. The Vostro V3360, however, is the most portable one by far.

I'd go for the Dell V3360 with 3 year on-site warranty and use the change to upgrade RAM to 8GB. Also get a Microsoft Cordless Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 (about R400).
