R13 000 bill for Windows update

Well done Vodacom for at least easing the pain somewhat (the user can be happy he is not with some other providers :D). If MS is indeed to blame they should really do the noble thing and cover the cost…
 
it's the pains of the SA broadband environment :(

in other countries the autostart feature is no issue. though one would think the windows update has a download manager type feature that resumes rather than restarts.
 
Us users do need to be more aware of what our internet connections are doing. Mobile 3G is not and should not be treated like an always-on connection. Thanks to the fact that South Africa is falling so far behind the civilized world technologically, even your ADSL connection should be monitored very carefully.
 
That's the main reason I manually do windows or linux updates so that I always know exactly what's going on

The problem has been fixed: Windows -> Trash; Ubuntu -> PC :)

Yes, they are completely different. That doesn't change the fact that with ubuntu you have complete control of what updates to apply and when. This wouldn't have happened with ubuntu (except with user intervention).

You can't compare them - one is an OS the other Not:p

Is it really the Windows or Vodacom data network??
I have had my share of downloading larger stuff to over 80%, then disconnect or just no life (eg browsing). Without using a download manager, I have tossed away a fair share of MB's.

Often near the end of the month I don't let Ubuntu update until my bundle rolls over. With Windows it just does its own thing..

I'm pretty sure my XP is setup to do any updates when I tell it. Of course i am probably on XP for a day or two at most in a month so it is possible that i don't give it the necessary time to do its own thing.
