"MOTORISTS bust while “driving and dialling” will fork out at least R1 500 to get their cellphones back from the start of next year.

And that is just after the first offence. Repeat offenders could land up paying up to R4 000.

At the moment motorists pay a R500 fine and get their phones back. But from January, they can add an extra R1 000 or so to that fee before the phone will be released." :eek:

This is great news! I hope they roll this out in Gauteng as well (and are able to properly police it!)

I am tired of driving behind erratic morons who are playing with their cellphones! :mad:

I understand your gripe , but you never ever make a phone call or take one while driving? Not even emergency?

put your emergency lights on, or pull over.
Otherwise, use blue tooth or get a blue tooth system put in (with voice or dialing control)
 
I miss the old days when if you needed to use a phone while on the road you had to find a telephone booth.

I guess today's emergencies are more urgent.

Nope, the only times I have ever absolutely had to do it (like needing directions or something)... I pulled over to make the call.

It's pointless to use the phone while asking for directions AND driving. You will only get lost further and make all the people behind you mad.
 
My car was written off by a driver texting while he was driving and did not notice the cars had stopped at the traffic lights at the corner of Paradise Road and Newlands Avenue. He caused R 2 million damages as he caused 4 cars to jam into one another. His lawyer tried to thwart the claim on the grounds that I did not have my foot on the brake pedal (the handbrake was up) and therefore he could not have known that I was stationery. He also suggested that I was also talking on the phone (which was true) but tried hard not to let me mention that I was using a bluetooth headset. The magistrate thereupon asked me if I was talking and when I said I had a headset and produced it in court, ticked off the lawyer who he said was trying to mislead the court.
 
I can still understand when someone talks on a phone. There's other things like tuning your radio, looking at the person sitting next to you etc, that's just as dangerous. For me it's the people who's texting - they pose a real danger on the road
 
I often see some ladies flinging both of their hands in the air while making a point to their passenger, whilst doing 80km/hr in traffic

Talking to a person who is not in the car is infinitely more distracting than using the car controls. Even when you have a headset on, the moment you take the call it takes a few seconds to find your bearing. With a headset on.

You need to learn to multitask. My wife and daughters could do it from birth
