Don't you just hate it when you get R200 notes at an ATM and no shops in the vacinity wants to accept them. I can't even use them at some garages.

I usually get the R200 notes at Standard Bank ATMs. I never get R200 notes at FNB ATMs.

You tell the shop to STFU. Its legal tender and they are by law forced to accept it as payment.

if it's the new R200 they can't not take it. if it's the old one's and they don't have a notice stating they won't take, then tough to them.

I find the Nedbank ATM's or the main culprits for R200 notes.

And yes, by law they have to take them but what exactly can you do about it? The merchant is pretty stupid to turn down a sale.

Nope there was a article in the papers a few months ago by the reserve bank, they can not refuse to accept current R200 notes from you.

I'm pretty sure you can legally refuse to do business with anyone...
But if you already owe them the money it's too late for them to refuse.

I wonder where the chinese dude went dat made these fake notes......lol...........heard he was selling da fakes out of a car in Joburg central..........at half price.........100 for 200 good deal I have to say but ja everyone has to accept them or u can contact the bank and advise them of your problem they will be more than happy to exchange them for u

Legally the (verbal) contract already exists at the time when you pull out your cash so its a bit too late to refuse. i.e. Its simply a question of both parties performing in terms of the contract. Meaning they had over the goods you hand over the cash. If they refuse to accept the legal tender as payment then they are in for a rude surprise. (I think contract law says the payment is deemed to have been made in such cases).

That is a more serious. If you can prove it then you might just score (see above).

@xumwun & 8800 Pennies: That won't fly in SA. We actually do have laws that prevent a bazillion 1cents coins to be used. i.e. Its not legal tender anymore in that case. Can't remember the details but basically it says if its RX amount in total then it may not be made up of more than XYZ coins. Its in the same act that regulates legal tender.

Reminds me of the time me and my friend paid R53 at a cafe in 5, 10, 20 cent coins.. Man we were broke, but the good tasting milkshakes outweighed the feeling of being *******s :)

EDIT: On a serious note, MyBB edits out asshole?

Its legal tender they must accept it. Unless they can prove that it is fake.

Might be hard if you are buying chappies but if you fill a tank of petrol or have dinner at a restaurant they cant not accept it.

Don't worry, soon R200 will be a lot more common.

I've got about R100 in 5c that I want to spend one day

There's actually a limit to what they're obliged to accept in coins. I don't remember exactly what it was - I learnt it 5 years ago in a Business Law course - but it's something like: if you anything over R25 may not be paid with 5c coins, and R50 may not be paid with 10c coins, etc.
