R3807 per Mbps for SEACOM bandwidth

Seeing as we talking about BCSNet: Screamer and DigiChilli. I figured I'd post some info on both Screamer and DigiChilli's Entry level packages.

Screamer = R399 for 384k Uncapped + R35 for a public IP (monthly) + R400 for a router to use a public IP. Without the router cost you looking at R144 per 128k

DigiChilli = R300 for 256k Uncapped (this includes a public IP and no special router required) at R150 per 128k or if you take their Mild package its R500 for 2x 256k connections which works out to R125 per 128k

I did this comparison a month ago and found the following.
Firstly I do not need a public IP because I dont do Dynamic DNS'ing or whatever else and just want to be able to surf and download. I asked Screamer when they would be issuing public IP's for free and they said in about a week or two when their IP range had been registered at all the service providers around the world so the comparison of public IP charges and routers is irrelevant.

I also did not want to go back and use a 256k line when even Telkom don't provide 256k ADSL lines anymore but even when comparing byte for byte entry level charges Screamer works out at R1.03 (R399/384). Chilli on the other hand works out at R1.17 per byte (R300/256). This diff adds up over a larger download and this difference is clearly obvious at the faster package levels where Screamer charges R799 for 512kbps and Chilli charges R1000.

The choice is obvious and I am now getting my 510 download on my 512 kb account.

I love this discussion when I think of what I was paying last month!!!

guys a general rule on contention ratios, the slower the speed of the connection the lower the contention ratio has to be. This is to ensure the service remains usable. So you could content a 4mbps link at 20:1 without the connections becoming unusable but if you did that on a 256 pipe you would wait till hell froze over before a website loaded. Odds are the 256 conn's are contented at about 6:1 to 8:1.

Give us uncapped for a period like 24 hours or maybe 48 hours at a certain affordable price. Not everyone requires uncapped permanently.

That makes absolutely no sense if I have uncapped I want it constant. I don't want to have to schedule my downloads for certain times of the month and have the rest of the month capped. If you're going to do that make it uncapped at night and weekends like a lot of other ISPs have been doing. Still doesn't sit well with me, but at least it makes more sense than one 24hr period during the month. We have bandwidth to spare now, do away with caps entirely.

I am tired of checking my usage.

Surely the Universities can't pay almost R4k per Mbps. We've just been connected at Stellenbosch University at an apparent 600mbps.

Here's a screenshot where my friend downloaded an openSuse ISO at almost 18 MEGABYTES/second:

Unfortunately the other South African servers/sites aren't capable of those kinds of speeds. 20 mbps was the maximum I was able to get was from Neotel's speed test:

Plus, they are on a sort of 'rent-to-own' scheme, iirc, where after a certain number of years they'll get that bandwidth for free, permanently.

What do I want? Uncapped, unshaped, unthrottled adsl on a 20 meg line for under R1000. What? Its a fair price. Ask Europe or Asia.

R267 and R3807??

either seacom hasn't done what they said they would, or R3807 is still an absolute rip off

i think that if you take 9.6gbps then you only pay R267 per mbps per month.

however, if you only take 1mpbs per month, then you pay R3 807

in light of these two posts- why don't all the companies get together and buy the 9,6gbps, then split it themselves- I mean if the difference is 267 and 3807, they could make a lot more money...

It would be risky though I guess...

I think I'd rather go SAOL, they have existed for years and don't have such big "quality" issues as these others seem to have, even if it costs a few buck more, but remember, the R499 includes the ADSL line rental.

In all fairness, when a company is reselling a service from another company, that company that acts is a reseller is the last point of contact for the client. Should the service be poor, the reseller is responsible to source a new supplier. If the reseller says "the problem is because our supplier is really crap", I read that as "this is not our problem, so give us your money and shut up".

My solution would be:

1. Take my business
2. Go elsewhere
3. ???????
4. Profit
