Guys, is it possible to get a decent car for R40,000?
Or would that money serve better as a deposito?

It's quite possible, but you'll be getting either a small car with 100,000+ km on the clock, or something more substantial that's heading towards the mid- to late 100,000 mark.

It all depends on what your expectations are.

To give you an idea, there are currently 883 entries on AutoTrader between the R35k and R45k mark. Sure, 600 of those might be complete bags of bolts, but there will be more than enough decent options to choose from.

The question remains, what are your expectations?

i fixed a crashed 2006 cbr1000rr with 11k on the clock for 40k. was like new. now, wouldn't you MUCH rather have a stallion than a pony? :)

If you know cars or have a very clued up buddy else you can be easily burned you can pick up some good deals at auctions. Prior to a auction go check out what's available and then record the details of the specific cars you are interested in, have someone with experience check the cars out that also has no emotional interest in the purchase. Afterwards go and do a thorough background check on that car as you can pick up it's service and insurance claims history. I think these days you can even get a week with the car and if not happy get your money back or some sort of guarantee like that.

It's not a route I would recommend for most people but it's an option.

Yeah, my wife-to-be's mother bought a Ford Fiesta 1.4, 2007 model for just under R60,000 at an auction at Michael James. So it's quite possible to go the auction route. But then again, I know little to nothing about cars. My philosophy was always, a car's purpose is to take you from A to B. If it can't do that it isn't car. So any tipe of car that gets me there would suffice. But you know that kind of attitude makes a person not so much interested in cars. Couldn't care less about performance, etc. The car should just do its job! ;-)

The Toyota Tazz option, which some of you mentioned, is not a bad one. Could fit in quite nicely with my short-term goals. Not looking for anything flashy, or powerful; should just do the job. :-)

Oh, and the fiesta had 32000km on the clock...

If you just want something to get to from A to B then R40 000 should be fine. I'm a student and was giving a toyota Corolla (8th Generation) from my parents and it had 160 000km on the clock (I'm guessing it was worth a little over R45 000) now 3 years later it's got almost 300 000km and the only repair it's needed is to the starter motor (cost R900) and it's still going strong :)

:wtf: Do you commute from JHB to UCT every day to get to class? :D

3 years = 156 weeks. 140000km/156 weeks =~ 900km/week =~ 130km/day.
believable

130km every single day for 3 years, as a student. I find that a bit hard to believe. But whatever the maths is probably a bit out, maybe throw in some road trips.

I'm also looking at a car for around R40k cash. Tazz is a good option, just irritating that a Tazz (3 of em) is the only car my parents have ever owned, therefore that I've driven too. Will be very boring but I guess it doesn't matter. Any similar options that are recommended?

it may very well be that 3 years was actually 3 and some months. simon's town is about 60km from UCT and i know students who commute that... throw in a few road trips, and voila!

as a student with a 4km daily commute, i was putting on 1500km a week on my bike. lots to do, lots to see :)

back to topic -
my advice: if you can get a good tazz, get it. there will be plenty opportunity later in life to get a not "boring" car :D

Lol, I promise you it's true, I live 60km (120 km there and back) away from varsity. And like my profile says 'I live in the middle-of-no-where' so if I just want to go to the movies it's 35km (there and back 70km), or just visit a friend 30km (there and back 60km) or go to gym 35km (70km there and back) things like that add up quickly.

Back to the OP's topic, I would recommend and oldish Japanese car (reliable, economical and cheap to repair). Maybe a Corolla, tazz, maybe even a Honda, people will tell you that it's boring but a car is what you make of it. I've had many happy adventures in mine and can't image getting rid of the old girl.

I've got a 2004 Corsa lite with 70 000kms for R40 000 if you are interested.

A Corsa Lite would be quite a nice option for me too, I just don't like that they're so easy to break into. See the car breakers around here have figured out that it's very easy to bend open the door of a Corsa and get in without setting off any alarm. They did it to my friend's Corsa right outside my house and to countless more, all by bending the door, in our area. Any idea if the later models (maybe even your 2004) have sorted this out?

The mechanic my friend took his to said he'd seen lots of Corsas like that and just bent it back with his hands. You need to get it reinforced really though.

Haven't really heard of that issue in the 2004 models, although have heard of the 2006 models back glass shattering spontaneously due to some problem with the demister temperature.
