Happened with my Mom's E30 320i on the highway years ago - your first thought is someone is shooting at you. Not cool!
 
Go with the Toyota.......that reliability and peace of mind is something you cant buy with another brand.

Maybe a 1997 Corolla 160i GLE will be a good option also, comes with AC/PS/CL
 
If you want to get into something much safer, you could use the money as a deposit and maybe get yourself a Toyota Yaris for about 70k - 80k. That's what I would do. :)
 
You can have my Mazda MX5 for 40 000 it's a 1996 112 000 km very good condition.
