SECOND RABBI RESIGNS OVER TESTIMONY ON AUSTRALIA'S CHILD SEX INQUIRY
The top rabbi in Australia has resigned over a text message in which he referred to the father of a sex abuse victim as a "lunatic," a Jewish news website reported Monday.
Meir Schlomo Kluwgant admitted to a national inquiry into child sex abuse on Friday he had made the comment to a newspaper editor, J-Wire said.
He was the second Jewish religious leader to step down in less than a week as a royal commission investigates allegations of child sex abuse.
Jewish Care chief executive Bill Appleby confirmed that Kluwgant had resigned as general manager of cultural and spiritual services in Victoria, J-Wire said.
"Jewish Care Victoria has a strong record of supporting victims of abuse," Appleby said.
Kluwgant reportedly made the comment about Zephaniah Waks, whose son Manny went public over child sex abuse within the community in 2011.
The now 38-year-old who grew up in Melbourne's Orthodox Jewish community said he was repeatedly assaulted as a child at institutions, which he said either denied, ignored or covered up the crimes.
On Wednesday, the director of an ultra-orthodox yeshiva in Sydney was forced to resign after his comments to the inquiry on paedophiles and apparent tolerance of historical child sex abuse caused an outcry.
Rabbi Yosef Feldman told the commission that not all sex-abuse cases warranted police intervention, and suggested that courts could offer leniency to paedophiles who no longer offend.
The inquiry has focused on instances of sexual assault of children at Jewish schools and other institutes in Australia.
