Cape Town - A racial storm has erupted in Western Province schools rugby after a team walked off the field due to alleged racial abuse.

According to the IOL website, Wynberg Boys’ Under-16 team walked off during a match against Paarl Gymnasium over the weekend after the apparent use of the k-word directed towards one of their players.

At some point a Paarl Gym boy allegedly also told a boy from Wynberg: “I will slap the coloured off your face.”

The alleged slurs continued into the second half when Wynberg decided to walk off the field, with Paarl Gym leading 33-0.

Wynberg Boys' principal Keith Richardson said he was pursuing the matter and was trying to get hold of the referee, who is said to have heard the racial slurs and done nothing to stop them.

“I spoke to the Paarl Gym's headmaster and he hadn’t heard of the incident. I think there is more going around on social networks,” he said.

“We are trying to research the exact facts.”

Paarl Gymnasium's headmaster, Eddie Bateman, could not be reached for comment on Monday, nor could their head of rugby, Deon Gerber.

The Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) said they are yet to receive a complaint or a report on the incident.

Rugby banter... They should go play club rugby or maybe even Rugga, maak sake reg in die bar na die tyd. But on school level this is highly unacceptable.

I'm sure the 33-0 thrashing they were getting wasn't helping them want to stay either :P

This is ridiculous, everyone knows there is no racism in the Western Province

In all honesty this happens regularly on all rugby levels. Those teams will also be mixed racial teams and mostly these remarks are made by coloureds towards coloureds, they do it naturally in rugby. Go watch Collegians play a game, ma se **** is heard quite often. Any league below Super A can escalate quite quickly; even Rugga with their own rule set is more “clean” nowadays. WPRU receives tons of complaints all via Fax… Usually it is the spectators stirring the atmosphere. But this is on school level U/16, they should ask the ref to write a report on the issue before making a scene.

Wonder which is true ...... the racism from one side or the other side, with all their ma se ****'s getting gatvol of a 33-0 thrashing. Proof or gtfo.

Cape Town - A Paarl Gymnasium rugby player has been banned from playing for a year after being found guilty of making racist remarks.

This comes after a racial storm erupted in Western Province schools rugby earlier this month when Wynberg's Under-16 team walked off during a match against Paarl Gymnasium after the apparent use of the k-word directed towards one of their players.

At some point a Paarl Gym boy allegedly also told a boy from Wynberg: “I will slap the coloured off your face.”

According to the SARugbymag website, Paarl Gymnasium held an independent disciplinary hearing on June 21, with the external committee including a former judge, an outside school principal and a practicing attorney.

One player was found guilty of misconduct and received a year-long ban from rugby. A further sanction was imposed, which stipulated that the student may face expulsion if found guilty of a similar offence in future.

With Paarl Gym leading 33-0 early in the second half, the game was ended by the referee after exchanges between the teams became too heated.

An earlier report indicated there was unnecessary chirping at the referee's decisions, and it reached boiling point ten minutes into the second half when a try was awarded to Paarl Gym, which appeared to contain multiple infringements during the build-up.

Wynberg players reportedly protested the awarding of the try, with a retreating Paarl player then responding by saying something offensive, which upset the Wynberg team, who then refused to move behind the tryline to allow the conversion to take place.

At this point, a Wynberg parent got involved, telling the team to move behind the posts. But the parent was then informed by one of the players that a Paarl player had used racist language. The parent then went up to the referee to suggest that the game be terminated.

unfortunately punishments don't change the beliefs

Good that they banned the player. But this quote is not allowed and I can assure that there is more to the disciplinary discussions, also why it is independent; I get the idea that they might be protecting this parent. It is a breach in the code; this parent did intervene according to the Law 6.A.4. This parent will have some conduct disputes.

The English language won't be walking straight for a while after what you just did to it.

How is slapping the coloured off anyone's face a racist statement? Can anyone do it? Or only white or black kids?

Or maybe nobody can? In which case it is just talking crap.
