Radio as you know it is dead

So it's still quite costly if you don't have access to free WiFi.

Well I live in PE, where it barely takes 20 minutes to get across town and most trips don't take more than 15 minutes unless you're stuck in peak traffic. You don't need much data to stream in the car here.

I despise local music radio. If the "dj's" are not talking incessantly about the latest thing that is grabbing their petulant fancy, they and their masters do FSKALL to promote local talent/bands unless these bands make it big overseas.
Just like our political landscape, diverse and exciting music has been trimmed and watered down to popular and banal tripe.
I know that the "dj's" and most who work at the stations are given the strict script to stick to, but it's still a crock of crap anyways.

Hell man, I used to go listen to metal bands and hard rap groups perform and practice in Mitchells Plain, 25 years ago, when been seen there. would have gotten me arrested. What about Rust, a metal band out of Botswana? There was and still is such a HUGE and diverse musical talent here in Southern Africa, and nothing is done to develop it.

Local radio stations and local producers are just like our government... Profit taking, sociopath leeches, who are the root cause of the state of this country.

Music transcends and brings everyone together.

You don't need a PC to enjoy radio streaming. Just use the TuneIn Radio app and listen to whatever station you want. I listen to radio from all around the world.

Aha yes!!! I agree with you but I don't have a smartphone. I have a simple non-state-of-the-art Nokia for talking and SMSs. It works for me.

The PC is hooked up to a hi-fi system with a reasonably good set of speakers giving me sound throughout my house. Heaven ............ !!!

That's cool. The only downside is that I've found some radio stations with TuneIn Radio don't work in the desktop app. BBC stations for example. Have you had that problem?

Radio is far from dead. Just cos SA Radio sucks doesn't mean the medium is dead.
I don't think Radio will ever go away, at least not for many, many decades still.
And even then, it will always be a fall back medium.
I remember a similar article about a year ago from Gareth Cliff and nothing has changed in the past 12 months.

I must say though, I really enjoyed listening to Satellite Radio in the USA.
I could get used to that here.

I agree. As crappy as the content is in SA, the medium is not dead. IT’S CHEAP and convenient and will be around for a long time. However, the TV medium might be dying worldwide. TV is expensive, energy intensive and the content can be better had on computers.

Satellite Radio seems obvious for Africa. I don’t know why it hasn’t been implemented. Probably a freedom of information and political control issue with African dictatorships.

Yes and ?
One example is that Primedia is anti-gun, so all their gun-related interviews make GFSA centre stage with no gun forums represented. The same goes for segments produced by their news partner, EWN. Bias creeping in.

I use to listen to Phil Wright on 5fm years ago. He use to talk about the bands... Their history and whole life lol which made it very informative. So you get to know a lot more of the bands. And most of the time he use to play the music uninterrupted .

I wish more radio presenters would do this, but some have such a love of their own voice I want to puke.

I think the big problem is the presenters can no longer do it on their own. They need people to talk to in the studio (or phone in). The last decent solo presenter was Mike Mills and he got canned to make way for D. Scott's Ballz. Tony Blewitt and Barney Simon are ok, but they are also following the trend of using extras.

Personally, I don't want to listen to what the person on the street thinks. Keep me entertained with decent music (which is also lacking) and the presenter's intelligence...

They are indeed, most of their presenters as well, I know this for fact ;)
Their anti Israel bias as well. Having someone on there like Adam Habib?I just turn off when he comes on

Also ridiculously pro the #RhodesMustFall movement. Haven't noticed a single prominent anti Rhodes Must Fall individual being interviewed - Dr. Rodney Warwick or Dr. Cardo (DA MP).

TuneIn Radio is what I refer to as a portal. Some portal links work better than others. I like to use different portals for different stations because some of the stations will work using one portal and not on another. I don't know why this is but that is the way it is!

These portals all work from my PC using IE11; they should also work with Firefox and Google Chrome. I don't know if they would work using Apple products. You could try some of the following portals:

They also purged some Jewish presenters Lisa Chait and Leigh Bennie.

Leigh was a pleasure to listen to.

What about 101.9 chaifm?, is it any better than highveld, their news seems better, more informative than EWN.
