Rage 2011 Pre-lan Headset research/buy

Hey

I'm looking to buy myself a new headset for rAge, my last ones broke just after the last rAge (Sonar Cyber-Snipa 5.1 usb).

Now I'm looking for good sound for games obviously, so this doesn't mean I need 5.1, stereo is great for all gaming needs as long as the headset matches up.
It must have a decent mic, I've had issues with USB headsets and mics, so if there is a regular 3.5 jack headset that'd be good, Otherwise it must be painless setting up the USB headset with Windows 7 64-bit.
(or if it has both options thats also a plus)
Comfort!! Big chucky headsets get hot and uncomfortable quick, and rAge is hours and hours of gaming. I was looking at the Steel Series Siberia Neckband headset, as a wrap around the neck does suit me more if its comfortable for long game sessions.

My Budget goes up to R700 about, I don't need TOP of the line, I just want to hear what's going on, who's creeping up behind me, and I want to be able to tell my team mates what's going down! :)

I had looked at these too, and lead me to the Siberia Neckband version of them too, Steel Series seems to have some decent headsets, are they comfortable, not too hot over the ears, etc. I tend to have 2-3 hour sessions of games at a LAN.

Yeah I've seen lots of great reviews for the Kave, Same question as above though; Are the comfortable for long sessions, and for a 5.1 headset does the bass over power other sounds? (Some first person games the bass of the weapons fire and explosions is insanely overpowering, not letting you know footsteps etc)

Thanks for the suggestions. The Steel Series and Kave are in my consideration lineup :D

Unfortunatel I don't own a pair of Kaves. I got myself a pair of Logitech G35s. But I did borrow a pair of kave headsets for an hour or so once and they were very comfy. Bass wasn't too bad. Sound was clear, could hear footsteps over gunfire etc.
 
Kave offers good value but they're heavy and uncomfortable. I felt there was just way too much heavy plastic used.

If you had just north of R1,000 then Sennheiser HD555 are your best bet, but you'll probably want a decent amplified sound card for them at a later stage. They use an open design so others can hear you and vice versa, probably not ideal for a LAN.

If you had north of R2,000 then the Asus Xense sound card bundle with closed Sennheiser PC-350 cannot be beaten. Highly recommended.

Played BFBC2 for 4 hours Sunday and no discomfort at all. They are my first decent headset so I can't compare to anything else. I wanted Roccat Kave's but could'nt find anyone with stock.

But the G35s are still the best. ;)
 
I've got the Kave, love it to bits. The sound quality is amazing and find it very comfortable. I've done a 24hr LAN recently with no issues whatsoever. I'll even where it to bed. :)

Two negatives for me with the Kave are:

1. The friggin cable. It's not braided and I end untwisting the thing about twice a week.
2. Too many cables. It doesn't have a USB sound card built in, so you have 5 analogue connecters for the surround and mic and a USB cable for power.

Otherwise, great headset and great value for the price. My next headset would be something wireless though.
 
G35s are nice, But for a headset I'd only go to my original price range, as I don't use a headset at home and mainly only for LANs I'm not going to go too high.
I shall be checking the Razer Carcharias. Right now I'm looking for sound quality & comfort. Also the less outside noise I hear the better. Pity there are no lightweight behind the head headsets to match my current requirements.

Logitech G330? But they're not closed design, so you hear outside noises.

Kave's definitely offer best value, but most reports state they're uncomfortable after long periods due to the plastic and weight.

Yeah, at moment I'm considering closed designs with The Kaves, SteelSeries Siberia V2s, Or maybe some other thing(like a Razer set) that pops up. Maybe I will just go cheap, But I'd like something for the next couple of years. Still have a month to decide!

If you have a month to save, and you are serious about gaming/music, I still recommend considering the Asus/Sennheiser Xense bundle at about R2,300. Will last you a really long time.

And there is no doubt about it that Sennies (or other high end headphones) would kill anything from cheapie Logitech/Roccat/Razer/Steelseries...

Gamers rave about their cheapie headsets, they really don't understand what they're missing.
