So....I am just going to rant a bit on behalf of my colleague because this type of behavior is unacceptable and should NOT be tolerated.

My colleague, for the sake of this story, let's call him Fred, who lives in a flat that is built on a home. Fred is renting this from an elderly lady, and for the sake of this story, let's call her Ann.

So Ann has an ADSL line and phone line from Telkom, she is a bit old school and wants the phone line, however not the ADSL as Ann's contract has come to an end. Just some more information, Telkom has been denying her to cancel the ADSL line due to documentation that's needed of her late husband etc.

Now that the contract has is coming to the end, Fred told Ann that he would deal with the new fiber lines to get the best deal and or value for money. Fred said he would pay the fiber himself. Ann's only request is to have the normal phone line still in place.

So here is where the whole story comes together.

Saturday, telkom came around and told her that she needs to take a fiber contract with them. When she questioned why they explained that other companies slander telkoms name and do not deliver good service at all. They continued to state that she would not be able to have a telephone line and fiber connection if the fiber is not from telkom. The one last thing they told her when she did not budge was...and I quote... "We will cut your current ADSL internet if you do not sign up with us for fiber and you won't have internet."

Ann was scared at the stage and signed the contract.

I feel this is extortion at its best. Bullying people to buy a product they do not want.

From my side, I will NEVER support telkom ever again!

Certain sales staff seem to be taking this extortionist approach, it's sad and unethical.

Ann is lucky though, she is a consumer and protected by the Consumer protection act. This means she has a cool off period (and I suggest she uses this) to cancel this contract (without penalty). I also suggest she lays a complaint with the Consumer Service and Goods Ombudsman for these extortionist sales tactics.

Once she's cancelled, I'd suggest you contact any of a long list of ISPs who provide fibre on Openserve, and get Ann a VoIP phone (you can run a cable from your router or better yet, get a cordless unit), port her number and voila, neither of you have to ever deal with a certain provider again.
