RAID 0 setup - does it make much difference?

3 drives? :eek:

So the two drives that you have in RAID, is that in addition to the one that has the OS installed on it? And does size matter? Like will 2 x 160GB drives in RAID be a lot better than 2 x 80GB?
 
Had it in raid, not anymore. Needed the drive for something else.

Basicly just the 2x drives in the system, raided they form 1x 320GB partition, which OS & the lot sit on.
No differance in size's.

So get an extra drive :D Is it really worth taking the risk with RAID0? Sure lots of people will say that they've never had a problem, but lots of people will also say that they have been screwed.

I see.

So the performance gain of using bigger hdds in RAID will be similar to the gain you normally experience with a bigger hdd? ie minimal...?
 
As long as you backup your important data regularly Raid0 wont hurt anybody :D

So with RAID 0 there is the risk of data loss right?

What is the difference with RAID 5 apart from the need for more drives? Why don't more people go the RAID 5 route?
 
RAID 5 uses parity to get teh data back on the failed drive, never done it myself but i heard it is a mission to do anyway.

HJ: Most gamers that use raid just use 2x 80gb in raid0, whatever is on these drives can be lost, its only windows, game installs etc. We have other drives/computers for the media.

I see. I already have a 160GB SATA drive. Thinking of getting another to try out the RAID 0 possibilities. Like you say, I would put nothing of value on the RAIDed drives, cept the OS and proggie installs etc.

You also don't hear that often that people have lost all their data due to a RAID 0 crash...

Yeah there is a risk but I suppose it's ok if you back p your stuff regularly. Most people don't go that route because of the need for 3 drives.

I don't care much about RAID any more though, I'm saving up for a SSD that's just large enough to run my OS and a few frequently used apps and compilers. For everything else I'll use an external drive :)

And these SSD's are that much faster?? Like the one's in the ASUS EEE?

Where can one find desktop ones?

I edited my post, have a look at the link. They're bloody expensive though, and only really necessary if you need the speed.

Yeah but they're pretty amazing. The comparison in that vid showed a laptop starting Vista in around a minute (which is already a feat in itself). The laptop with the SSD started it in 30 seconds. And some guys have even managed to get that down to around 10-15 seconds. I'm probably going to get the 16GB or 32GB, although the 32GB seems like better value. It's a long wait until Christmas :(

Eish. Five grand for one of these versus R500 for another 160GB drive and RAID. I think I know which one I am going with :p :)

Dunno, but I bought my macbook from amazon at a steal and I'll by my SSD from them in future if the prices don't come down here.

Looking at the site, the prices are way way cheaper than here in SA. What are the drawbacks? Delivery time and the fact that they only accept credit cards?

I assume that warranties aren't an issue as they are generally worldwide manufacturer-type ones...?

They don't deliver(electronics) to SA but do accept SA credit cards, I used a US remailer to accept my purchase and they shipped it to me, not sure about the warranties.

Edit: B&H deliver to SA though, I do still want to try them out as well.
