RAID 0 setup - does it make much difference?

They don't deliver(electronics) to SA but do accept SA credit cards, I used a US remailer to accept my purchase and they shipped it to me, not sure about the warranties.

I see. Mission then in that case :(

How can they not ship to SA?

They ship CD's and stuff but not sure why they cant electronics. anyway I'm gonna sleep. cheers

If you have some spare cash, how about 2x SSDs in a RAID 0 array used for Windows / Program Installs? :D

Then, two 500GB 7200s would be used for data (possibly a RAID 1 array).

By the way, this is a really cool review.

Agreed, 9 SSD drives in RAID 0 is extreme, but the review does compare a Raptor with 1 x SSD, 2x SSD (RAID), 5 x SSD (RAID) and 9 x SSD.

RAID5 combines the redundancy of RAID1 with the performance of RAID0. With RAID0, if one drive goes down then the entire array goes down. You'll basically be shooting yourself in the foot if you use the array to store critical data and one of the drives fails.

If you're going for speed and speed alone, without worring about HD failure, I wouldn't bother with RAID5. RAID10 for speed and redundancy, but then cost becomes a problem.

Dont think many motherboards support it though

Pal o' mine has 4x 37gig Raptors in a RAID0 array on a (now oldish) AMD939 board ..clearly he stores his NB files elsewhere! But this is the trick: four drives, not just two because it takes the use of 4 to (properly) fill the SATA bus, 2 just doesn't cut it. Oh, apps pretty much just *blink* open; it's quite a thing to behold!

Or you could go SCSI 320 but be sure to have someone on hand to restart your heart when you see the costs involved in that game! (to say nothing of BiTMICRO!)

So you reckon 4 drives would be 4 times as fast??

No, I don't. But it really IS faster than using only one drive, just HOW much faster would be a matter of benchmarking tools which is too much of a PITA to do - and RAID0 with 4 drives is the quickest way to 'reasonably' get this right. Sure you could use more but your hassle, and cost if you get a dedicated RAID card, factors escalate to the point of silliness ..but I'll help you out there if you've got the dosh! :D
