RAID Failure

A second controller, configured correctly, stored out of the machine, plus daily backups. Depending on criticality, some backups must go offsite on a regular basis. Regular testing that you can restore backups. Daily checking of the backup logs. RAID controller configuration stored on media off the machine if possible. Preferably a second backup device in another machine - you will look silly if the backplane has gone funny and wrecked your backup device and they don't make them any more. Regular restores on second backup device to ensure readability. Never place tapes on your subwoofer when transporting offsite.

Edit. Don't be a cheapskate with backup media. If you aren't you will kiss your ass in gratitude one day. If you are, you will kiss your ass goodbye one day!

welll... im running a Software RAID-5... but cant recommend it for office use tho. Write speed to the RAID is very slow when regenerating. ( <5MBps). After regenerating speeds are acceptable > 20MB/s.
Formatted my windows twice already, and the RAID still didnt fail. :)
Swapped controllers, etc etc without having alot of problems. Just import Foreign discs and Voila.

Only problem im having is that the moment power fails on the pc, and i boot it up, it starts regenerating. Doesnt matter if i was writing or reading from the RAID.

Can some ppl with hardware/software RAID-5 on their Windose machines confirm if the same is happening to them?

Thx alot

Want to expand on that?

Explain please.

It's a while since I mucked with RAID controllers, but the config was stored on the card and on the disks. So, the plan would be to configure controller 1, then configure controller 2 exactly the same by swapping them, making sure that BOTH will work with your disk set. Preferably before putting you only copy of mission-critical data on the drive set. Then make notes of the configuration, or see if there is a way to save the configuration to a normally accessible file - if so, write to a CD - then put one controller, notes, config away in a safe place.
