RAID : Still popular or not ?

Do hosting companies still make sure of RAID ?

I'm interested in where the question comes from though.

I'd imagine that something like Ceph could also be common, as it would provide many similar benefits to raid.
 
Ceph is useful depending on what your storage requirements are and if the workload is suited for ceph storage.

As for raid, yes it's still very widely used, except there is no real "hardware raid" for NVME, only software raid.
Even Intel's VROC for Nvme's is software based raid.

A nice characteristic of modern software defined storage over normal RAID is that when a drive fails, SDS can immediately begin reconstructing the lost data on healthy disks (assuming adequate free capacity and a redundant storage scheme.) Especially with arrays containing large capacity disks, this can lead to a quicker recovery time versus rebuilding a normal RAID with a new disk or hot spare and consequently reduces the time when the array is at risk of subsequent disk failures.

So I think it would depend on the kind of hosting that is happening.

I seem to be under the impression that something like Amazon EC2 is backed by SDS (as you describe it though it's the first time I'm hearing that term). But a local VPS such as @Jade @ Absolute Hosting may have to offer, is likely on a beefy server with some kind of RAID on it. RAID is more about uptime and availability than anything else, because if a drive fails, your performance may degrade a bit, but everything still works while you get another one and swap it out.

SDS is only really practical if you have large clusters with fast networks. Backblaze has some interesting resources if you want to learn about that.
