Rain 5G - Brackenfell

Well there is definitely some fiddling happening with Netflix and video in general.

Middle of the day Netflix is perfect and I can do the new video Speedtest on their app at 4K without issue.

Come this time of the evening Netfix goes to hell and I can’t even complete a 480p SpeedTest.

Jump on VPN on my phone and it’s magically 1440p, which is better but still not 4K.

Overall speed is still fine at 240D/33U.
Exactly, I see the same exact issues, and still people rag on me that I'm talking BS
Speedtest shows full speed.
YouTube and Netflix lags.

Oh it doesn’t lag, I mean it’s not the end of the world but there’s definitely a drop in quality specific to streaming video.

I haven’t actually tested against YouTube, as I’ve used it very rarely in “peak” time.

I was going to post this. I'm almost 100% sure @SauRoNZA has fibre so I'm curious as to why he's risking it with Rain, especially considering their track record over the last few months. And then working from home.

I'm currently using the R99 for 10GB LTE option from Telkom Mobile as a backup specifically as a backup option for load shedding. My laptop will comfortably handle being disconnected from the grid for a couple of hours.

My company is willing to pay for the data via mobile, but not for my fibre line as they see the fibre as a household commodity for my family's use. Makes no sense, but I'm not going to argue. I was playing with the thought of downgrading my fibre to 10 meg (currently 200) and getting Rain and having the company pay for it...

As illustrated already no fibre. There is some dispute or something between Openserve and Vumatel for my specific zone and hence nothing gets done but false promises.

But I’ve been quite happy with my VDSL from Telkom up and until middle of last year when every time there is load shedding the sync goes to **** and I need to log a case and get someone out etc.

Eventually after much struggling they upgraded me from 20Mb to 40MB which happened in the line within days but the idiots didn’t upgrade the PPPoE account as well and as of end the of October it was impossible for me to find anyone at Telkom capable of fixing this.

I even had an agent finally find and agree it’s the issue after I told them as much testing with an Afrihost account and they kept sending technicians out, but he couldn’t actually fix it.

Eventually I was like just delete the account and make a new one. Sure we’ll get back to you…well I’m still waiting.

So out of sheer desperation I ordered 5G early in January and it’s been fantastic since day one with rarely an issue. I also have internet through load shedding which is great.

It beats the crap out of my VDSL hands down and rand for rand I doubt fibre could do much better.

Sure I could opt for a lower line speed and score a little bit of ultimately inconsequential latency, but as we’ve ascertained already fibre is not an option.

Lag is the wrong term sorry, if quilty is fixed to say 1080, it buffers every few seconds, continuous playback is not possible.
