Rain 5G - Brackenfell

Zero tuning, indoors with 3/5 bars signal.

My only annoyance so far is that unless I can't find it in the over abundance of paperwork is that you can't connect to it over WiFi directly out of the box as I've come to expect from all these things.

That upload suggests not the best radio conditions. You might want to play around with it.

I'm not sure what you mean in terms of the wifi though.

There's nothing on the box or in the manual with the PSK to connect to the WiFi straight out of the box, you have to use a LAN cable to get into it to configure it or get the default one out.

It's just been many years since I've needed to do that with anything and being on a laptop without ethernet it's archaic to me.

Had quite a bit of trouble getting it to play nice with the Ubiquiti Dream Machine, but once I put it into IP Passthrough/Forward mode that sorted itself out and to my surprise I can still access the device happily at it's own IP address.

It should be on the back of the device where the stand clips into.

Those are some good speeds there - hoping it stays the same / similar during peak and over time. It literally is luck of the draw, i think Cavedog and myself have had no issues at all but many many others have issues daily... keep and eye on it

I have hourly scheduled speed tests and graphing setup so I’ll definitely update as we go.

But when if I get 1/3rd of that as a minimum it’s still beats my VDSL rand for rand by some margin.

But brackenfell has fibre? :P

Good speed, but fibre more constant

It does not.

Some parts do, but there are plenty of voids.

Lots of false promises for years now.

Also if this speed remains I don’t think fibre can actually beat it for price.

Keen to see these results.

****ed my stats up today enabling the VPN on the server that tracks them which brings the speeds down to 50Mb or so.

Will reset again and make sure not to use it for the time being.

Xbox is complaining about a Double NAT but isn’t any worse for it.

Pretty sure it’s not local and relates to the C-NAT based network but didn’t figure the Xbox would be aware of that.

Maybe will try to connect directly to the CPE to see if it’s any different.

*****

Directly connected it stops moaning about Double NAT but still says it’s Strict.

uPnP is an outright fail.

Will need to see if it’s a real problem in the coming weeks.

Yeah because they give you a 10.x address getting any ort of outside access is nigh on impossible. Some guys ended up getting VPS to allow them to access CCTVs etc. the C-Nat will hamper FIFA matchplay type games, e.g. if you want to play with a specific friend

Yeah I know exactly how it works.

Best option is simply to Cloud outwards.

Not so much bothered with P2P games and to be honest don’t really do much (online) multiplayer any more anyway.

ZeroTier will work for when I really need to get in.

Well there is definitely some fiddling happening with Netflix and video in general.

Middle of the day Netflix is perfect and I can do the new video Speedtest on their app at 4K without issue.

Come this time of the evening Netfix goes to hell and I can’t even complete a 480p SpeedTest.

Jump on VPN on my phone and it’s magically 1440p, which is better but still not 4K.

Overall speed is still fine at 240D/33U.

I was going to post this. I'm almost 100% sure @SauRoNZA has fibre so I'm curious as to why he's risking it with Rain, especially considering their track record over the last few months. And then working from home.

I'm currently using the R99 for 10GB LTE option from Telkom Mobile as a backup specifically as a backup option for load shedding. My laptop will comfortably handle being disconnected from the grid for a couple of hours.

My company is willing to pay for the data via mobile, but not for my fibre line as they see the fibre as a household commodity for my family's use. Makes no sense, but I'm not going to argue. I was playing with the thought of downgrading my fibre to 10 meg (currently 200) and getting Rain and having the company pay for it...
