Restrictions are at Level 1 already. Doubt the city will ever go to 'Level 0' because they need to show permanent saving measures. Cape Town never went below Level 1, at least not in past 15 years.
The tariffs being charged presently are also labeled 'Level 1'.


There was a trick at the end of the last water restrictions. Level 3 was renamed to Level 1, so two whole levels have vanished completely!?

Prior to 2016/17 there was an extended period of wasteful water use (1200Ml/day versus 600Ml/day). You can clearly see this on the historical charts:

Yup, their arrogance knows no bounds! They locked in the Level 3 (new Level 1) as the lowest tariff, even while people were complaining how expensive it was.
Just hope they are not motivating the keeping of the stupid pipe levy on the fact that people are not buying as much of their product anymore.

Even if it rains for 40 days and nights and the dams overflow. Well, you probably don't need to water then, but during the dry summer, never again...
 
They noticed a decline in revenue from people being more water wise, collecting rain water and installing water wells and boreholes. So while reducing the amount of water they provided, they kept the revenue stream the same by shifting the goal posts.

In the 2 years since I've installed my well I've used less than 10kl from CoCT. In another couple of months my electricity should also be off grid. R50k annual revenue lost by CoCT just from 1 self sufficient household.

Off topic rant: You will realise how ridiculous that rule is for our complex. We have 36 apartments, and a 2000m^2 lawn. Try watering that in 2 hours per week!? That still averages less than 100l per person per day.

If 'common sense' applied we would limit it to 5 hours per week on cost grounds, but this is not permitted, so our lawn dies each summer. And no, we are not on an aquifer, so boreholes will not help. A 'workaround' would be to fit a massive irrigation system driven by a pump and a 40mm feed line, but that is ridiculous and defeats the spirit of the regulations.

It makes no logical sense to have such arbitrary restrictions, at times when there is no shortage of water...
 
With the weather lifting today, I got a chance to do some maintenance on my weather station (reinstall the wind vein, tighten the anemometer, wall bracket and U-bolts on the 2m mast).

All clear for at least the next week. Time for recovery...my walls painted just before the front moved in did not fare well...
 
So why did you place it so high up? Was this according to the installation instructions?

Accurate wind speeds should be clear of obstructions. The standard height is 10m, very different from the temperature standard of 1.5m. In an urban environment, away from structures is always better.

Pretty much what Gordon_R said. There are no manufacturer guidelines for exact height. Already, there are probably deflections on the roof which affect wind readings.
 
I agree that placement is crucial and that one needs to try and ensure known wind deflections effects from surrounding buildings and trees etc should be considered. However, placing a device that in itself becomes a pretty significant obstruction susceptible to wind load at the top of an unsupported pole as you have done is not at all advisable.

Thanks, did not know that. My understanding is that will only last until the levels drop below 80% (likely in January), so only brief respite for the lawn...

We are currently experiencing a Sandstorm, Wind swung to the NE and the cold has gone, by 15H00 it's gonna be dust everywhere......

The warmth will move down to the Cape on Thursday and Friday. No rain in the foreseeable future (7-10 days).

Those Sandstorms that we experienced today, blow their plumes more than 200km out over the Atlantic ocean...

Today I wore double masks, my lungs felt like there was sandpaper in them..... at least the wind died down nicely this evening....
