Some (slightly) unexpected rain over Cape Town this morning (Tues 8th), produced by a weak cutoff-low (upper trough). Most of the activity is offshore, and will have limited effects on land. A separate band of storms is producing rain over the interior of the Karoo.

N.B. An unusual feature of this event is the almost total lack of wind!

Fantastic cloud formations over lions head, signal hill and the side of table mountain. Not sure if anyone is in a position to snap a pic or two. Was driving when I saw it now. Cloud between the mountain and lions head looks like a glacier or avalanche.

Rained a bit yesterday afternoon but that was it. I enjoyed the cloudy weather, though.

I hear that Meiringspoort flooded yesterday causing the road to be closed?
50mm rain fell in the Hanover district in just over an hour.

Update, 15/01: More last night. Total for January 2012 is already 114.5 mm on the farm.

That is higher than the total January rainfall for the last 5 years.

Boreholes are running strong but very little run off into the dams so far.

Wife showed me a video... some serious water in Meiringspoort

KLEIN KAROO NEWS - Meiringspoort Pass is currently closed to traffic due to a flash flood in Klaarstroom that took place yesterday, Tuesday 12 January.

Water has receded, but a lot of debris on the road now needs to be cleared.

Was closed last night and the night before, but reopened in the morning after debris was cleared.

Some more heavy downpours forecasted in the area this afternoon. Will probably be closed again tonight.

4.5mm in our gauge in Kenilworth up to midday. Dry now, but expect a bit more rain later.

Cooler conditions are great, but as soon as the sun comes out, you can feel the humidity...
