Rain Recommended LTE/LTE-A Routers

Yes so the 22d can do rain band 3 and band 38 and telkom b3. The 65d model can do telkom b3 and telkom 40 lte advanced and rain b3.

Ideally with Rain you would want a router that can do B3 fdd and B38/41 tdd and 4x4 mimo. So the B618s-22d is great for that. Although it can't aggregate both bands it can connect to 1 at a time but have the advantage of 4x4 mimo as long as you use the build in antennas. In most cases b38 gives great speeds.

With Telkom and the B618s-65d you can aggregate 2 x 2300Mhz signals so that is nice. You can also just do normal b40 with 4x4 mimo.


So it depends what network you going to main and match the router accirdingly.

As for the other networks like Vodacom, MTN and Cellc both routers will work great as they will be able to aggregate b1+b3 which the lte-a setup the rest if the networks are running.

To put it in very simple terms think of the router as a download manager.

4x4 mimo is when you download a file from the same source with 4 threads.
2x2 mimo you are downloading from the same source with 2 threads.
Carrier aggregation is when you download from 2 sources with 2 connections to each.

Now carrier aggregation usually gives higher speeds because you using 2 sources. If one is congested and other one not you still get decent speeds.

With mimo you are esentially downloading from the same source but maxing that so if it's slow it's the source but you getting max throughput you ppssibly can.

When comparing the routers it's basically matching the supported frequencies with the networks. The sane router but diffirent model all can do the same but they don't support all the frequencies.
 
That is why you see people on the B618 forcing b 38/41 they will see speeds of 80Mbps+

Very interesting info :) thanks for sharing. How does one go about forcing the band's to 38/41? The B618 interface is extremely bare and doesn't seem to let you play with any of those settings
 
Trying out Rain on my Nokia 6 and speed is pretty awful - around 1.5Mbit/s to 5Mbit/s, mostly towards the 1.5Mbit/s side. This is even slower than my 2Mbit/s ADSL. The phone does indicate a full strength signal though.

Would getting a Huawei E5573 be an improvement?

Hi man, I got the E5885 last week! Loving it thus far, in peak times I get about 9mbps download and have gotten up to 22mbps on the 2600|TDD (32 band) in off peak times, that being said my signal on the 32 band isn’t that great so it could be better with good signal. Upload have been horrible all round though! Think the highest upload I got was like 3mbps
 
Thanks for the info. Is it fussy about where you place it in the room or can you just plonk it down anywhere?

If I’m on the 3 band then no, I usually get 4 bars signal, on the 32 band it is a bit fussy! Then I only get 2 bars on my desk, 3 bars at the window, guess it depend on where you live though!
 
Also testing the E5885, great little router, the fact that it has an ethernet port is awesome
 
Would it be okay to buy the E5885 from a Telkom store? I'm hoping they haven't put some kind of custom firmware on it.
 
Just make sure its the Pro 2 version, looks like there was an old version

When it comes to USB-based devices, however, things are much easier. OpenWRT/LEDE, Tomato, and DD-WRT generally have support for 4G LTE dongles over USB, and there are some Cat5 and Cat6 dongles available on the market, as evidenced by this exhaustive list of supported modems on DD-WRT. Support for most of these modems is still a work in progress, but the majority of them do work.

Modems that support Cat5 and Cat6 include:

  • Vodafone Huawei E5786, E5788
  • Netgear AC790S, AC791S/L, AC810S, AC815S
  • Sierra Wireless EM7430, EM7455, EM7455, MC7430, MC7455
  • Dell 5811e
As a reminder, if a modem or router supports at least Cat5 LTE, it will perform carrier aggregation as expected over two supported bands. Most consumer routers which have USB LTE support won't support all of the available chipsets out there, so there is a risk to going this route without testing things beforehand.

Hi,

I have an EM7455, but am unable to get a RAIN SIM to work. Having tried 3 different SIMs, I discovered this page, which provided the AT!BAND=? command. From what I can make out, my modem doesn't support 2600, the band that RAIN uses.

Unless I am confused, and the B7 is the same thing?

The current mode is 00, i.e. all bands.

I also upgraded the firmware to the latest I could find, namely SWI9X30C_02.30.01.01.

im not very techno savvy... but can someone wit the necessary knoledge kindly recommed which is the better deal... rain or rain via axxess. and both offer different routers so which is best? what about dual sim huawei phones?

im confused cos the guy i msged at rain says the special is LTE and not LTE-A

There's not much difference, but it's moot anyway. Axxess will only be able to sell it to you today and tomorrow, then new sales of fixed LTE are closed.

The "mobile" Rain product is purchased directly from them. A lot of people seem to be favouring that for the uncapped daytime data.

WHAT IF I TAKE AXXESSES LTE-A DEAL TODAY.... are they allowed to downgrade to lte by law?

You can't use fixed LTE-A in a phone (i.e. purchased from Axxess). Buy mobile from Rain directly.
