Rain Recommended LTE/LTE-A Routers

Hi, I have a TP-Link Archer MR200 router using a rain SIM.

Does anyone know how to force the band to 38 (2600Mhz)?
Is there any TP-Link band toolbox similar to Huawei routers that could help this procedure?
Or even a link to a script.

If you look at the suggested solution there is a beta firmware download link that allows manual band selection, they say it works on MR200(EU) V3/V4 which I guess is the same as the ZA version but I could be wrong?

If you are referring to this model then yes it should work because it has band 3/38 and 41 used by Rain

by the way, this firmware definitely works on our models. The portal page has watermarks for testing purposes all over it now but bands can be switched and all of them indeed show up. Gonna be testing in the coming weeks.

Huawei B311 was purchased for R899 last month, maybe check for specials.

Yep! Because towers are sparse here it managed to ignore my closer Band 3 tower and connect to a far away Band 38 one as confirmed on rain's website and got great speeds again, albeit with horrible upload but that's how it is. Definitely recommend flashing that.

I am using that exact firmware with my version MR200 V4. Band selection works.

B618-65D cause it supports both Rain & Telkom* whereas the B618-22d only works on Rain.

*Telkom uses 1800Mhz [both models do but only Telkom LTE] but also 2300Mhz [only 65D] which will give you upto LTE-A in a supported area for Telkom.

I really can't seem to tell the difference between the MR200 and MR6400 but it supports all the bands necessary for rain, just not sure on band switching support yet.

The B818 is also R3500 on Takealot and is actually the replacement for the B618. Rather get the B818 if you're willing to spend that amount.

If you only intend to use the b818 router for Rain only then there wont be much difference with the b618. This is due to the fact that B818 does not aggregate band b3 and b38. As such both routers can only do 4x4 MIMO in b38/41 and get similar speeds. If you also intend to use the B818 for other networks, then it will be worth it as it offers more aggregation options for the other networks. B818 will provide a very significant speed diff from b315 due to the lack of 4x4MIMO on the B315.

I may cancel my rain if a good deal comes. So I want a router that is flexible.

At the moment I have rain off peak and afrihost mtn fixed lte 150gb. Theres 8 of us in the family so I think 2 sims is necessary. I haven't tested them yet. I need to buy the routers. Ideally I'd like 2 b618...or maybe 1 b818. But that would cost me R7000 ! So currently I'm considering 1 b618 for mtn and 1 b525 for rain. I'm also looking for a second hand router. If I dont find one in a day or 2..I'm just going to buy it brand new.
What do you think ?

Unfortunately mtn fixed lte wont work with the B818. They for some reason do not have this router as one of their approved routers. Otherwise, the B818 router works very well with all SA networks including mtn non fixed lte sim cards. The B818 has the best performance and is probably the most flexible router with all other networks right now, with mtn fixed lte being the only exception.

if you are going to be sticking to mtn fixed lte for the foreseeable future then just get the b618 and b525 as per your plan above.

Yes, but not because of router limitations. It's imposed by MTN as their supported router list is a bit outdated. It should be included sooner or later. Works perfectly fine with non-fixed MTN LTE.
