Anyone know places in Jhb to get the tanks for a good price?

Looking at 2200l - 5000l tanks.

Has anyone here ever tried building a modular underground water storage system under their lawn or driveway?

All you will need is a couple of milk or fruit crates and order a pvc lining from a company that custom make dam liners.
http://www.waterwiseliners.co.za/earthdams.html

It is said to be very strong, you can cover it with ground and paving, and only 5% of the cubic volume is used by the the crates itself.

For me, a 5 000 liter YoYo tank is a unsightly intrusive thing in the back yard and since it is round, it don't have the best volume to size ratio.
But just a tiny 2m x 2m x 2m modular tank gives you 8 000 liters, a 3m x 3m x 3m one would give you 27 000 liters!

I think some people use JoJo type tanks because it's easier to install, temporary and uses gravity to drive the outflow.
With something underground you'd mostly need pumping to get it out again.

I know this thread is a bit old but wanted to add.

I have a 5000l tank and want to add couple more - but will wait until the veg garden expands. But last week I did two things. Placed a bucket under my geyser overflow - ever since I installed a solar geyser it has been has been dripping. Then I also placed a container in one of the sinks - the one used for rinsing. Anyway, the geyser bucket fills every two days - around 20l. I was supprised to find I empty the sink container (around 10l) fills at least twice a day, sometimes three times - besides rinsing the dishes, you would be supprised at how much water you using washing some lettuce, couple of pieces of fruit, waiting for hot water, washing your hands ect.

So, this cost me nothing, but am now using around 30L a day of pretty clean water that otherwise would be wasted - and thats without even really trying, spending anything AND not having to wait for it to rain. 900 liters a month....

Agree on the geyser overflow but can't you just replace the washer on the sink? That will not waste any overflow water.

Sorry, misunderstanding - it's not leaking, I am just using the water that would have been flushed down the drain when I rinse dishes, wash vegetables ect ect. :)

Sense has now been made. Great initiatives.

With all the heavy metals the mines pour into our water system Im not so sure.

But rainwater also lacks minerals so its not healthy to drink.

Get osmosis mineral filter to add minirals to rainwater.
