ok im in the market for some ram, now im going to use the ram to overclock my e6300, im only going to overcloick it to 2.8ghz, which means its going to be at 400mhz (7*400), now what im concerned about is the fact that if i get a gig of cheap ram will it be stable, or should i get more expensive ram? and can some one tell me what the different layers mean, like cheaper ram is layer 4 and the more expensive ram is layer 5 or 6. and whats the difference between say CL 4-4-4-12 and say CL 5-5-5-12 or CL 5-5-5-15?

what i did was this

i bought the gigabyte ga-965p-ds3

i bought 6300 and i bought 2 1 gig transend ddr 800mhz im running my 6300 @ 3.22ghz stable

you'll want copper heatsinks plus a 12 cm fan to blow air onto the ram sticks to keep em cool

ive 5-5-5-12/13 i dunno but i used 13 with my overclock

you'll also want a better fan for your cpu to keep that little bit cooler, starforce is a good fan but you have to superglue it on your heatsink

big up to grimmy for showing me the intel way

what speed is your transcend ram running at with the overclock? just want to get an idea of what it's capable of, got the same ram. :o

not sure will check when i boot up again and post

but this ram can overclock nice as long as you have air blowing on them and copperheats or else it keeps rebooting due to heat

killadoob, are you seriouse? dam thats so sweet that the transcend ram can over clock well, and stable, coz you see im more frearing that the ram may just stuff out. which has happened to my transcend drr400 ram, i got my current cpu(3200+) runing at 2,7 ghz, which means i had to do a lot of work with the ram, next thing i no, the one card just fried. and you see im slowly building up my computer, i just got my e6300 and im looking for a good stable overclocking mobo, and stable ram, but my budget it rather tight and where ever i can save money i'll be smileying. how much are those heat spreaders?

if it's the vantec copper heatspreaders that are on rectron's pricelist, they're R50 from rectron.

oh awesome, well if my new system is like killadoob, i'll be saving a few pennies which will go towards a better cooling (intel's cooling is like i sick puppy with it's legs broken, noisy as hell and quiting to be put out its pain)
and thats could also mean i can have more cash to spend on say, a bigger cpu(e6400), whats the maxium fsp on the gigabyte ga-965p-ds3?

I must say the stock cooling of the C2D is unbelievably quiet, idles at bout 900RPM and spins up to bout 1200RPM under load IIRC.

Although I doubt it's ideal for overclocking, but I guess you should be able to get close to 3Ghz with the stock fan. The temps i've seen just weren't that great. Idling at bout 49 degrees (with speedstep disabled) during this time of year.

ATM i'm using a cheap gigabyte neon 775 pro cooler i had lying around on my E6600, it's basically the same as the stock cooler although the outer fins are a bit higher and it has a 110mm fan that can be either automatically or manually controlled. right now it's spinning at 1500RPM which is the slowest and the CPU is idling at 36 degrees, with speedstep disabled ;)

well still havent rebooted but rectron not longer sell most of vantec stock well jhb branch anyhow

ya from what ive heard e600 isnt a really good overclocked but im not sure

i think if i had better ram i could push this cpu i mean ive read some oke got his e6300 to 3.6 but that was on an asus board with mighty expensive ram

ram gets superhot when overclocked

ya these cpu's will clock fine with stock cooling but i want to make sure heat wont be a problem

dunno the maximum on this gigabyte board but 3.22ghz is fine for me i dont want more

ngage maybe you could download aquamark and tell me how much cpu score you get

nice, but would you all recommend more pricey ram? and have any of you completly fried you ram? coz i did last night, there was even smoke coming out :( , it even fried the slot it was in, sure i was running it @ 250mhz, and i overvolted it to keep it stable, my lord i was scared when my computer shut down and then smoke was coming out the back. now im running 512mb  , and i must say, i never want to to go though it again, so...

dude you need a good board to avoid that sorta thing

my board would never allow my ram to fry

just wouldnt restart

Have the same mobo, but the S3 version.

GA-965 S3. The only difference between the 2, is that the DS3 has bigger capacitors.

Now this board is GREAT to overclock! It goes up to 505 FSB!!
My ram, same as killadoob's, can overclock to 900MHz

My setup:
GA-965 S3
E6400 Core2 2.13 overclocked at a stable @ 3.4Ghz 426x8 1:1 :D Stock cooling/volts!
1gig 800MHz of transcend jetram @ 900Mhz

*edit* So my point, the transcend jetram is great stuff :)

yea razor these conroe's are incredible

but razor just one thing have u checked its stable with prime95 and pcmark05

if those pass your fine

did you put copper heat sinks on your ram?

ya at that overclocki suspect the ram will get very hot when playing bf 2 and shut down

thats why you should prime 95 to make sure :)
