It is clearly labelled DDR2 so that it what you need. The bus will slow down to the slowest RAM so if you get 533MHz RAM it won't make the machine faster

+1. It should work, but memory bus will slow down from the current 400MHz to 333MHz and BIOS will use JEDEC #2 settings of this module or a newer one (whichever is slower).
I suggest to buy PC2-6400 (400MHz) module

Wasnt aware of this. Thanks a mil, ill be sure to look into that.

You get plenty of second-hand DDR2 now, as people are upgrading their machines. I have 2 pieces lying in a drawer here. It is labelled PC3200 512mb DDR400 and has a metal jacket. You can have it for free

Dddr400 is for Pentium 4 pc's.

Crucial has a scanner app that lets you know if the ram can be upgrade or not.

Get a program like Glary utilities to prevent unnecessary programs from starting up with the pc. It makes a world of difference.

It slows down as soon as its got Word, Adobe, Dropbox and some Chrome tabs open. There doesnt seem to be anything else running, so I dont think start up appps could be the issue? Regardless, ill take a look.

See if you've got items in quick launch or in the righthand side of the taskbar. These are the items that load into memory to speed up launch times.

That was the first thing I checked.
This is a pretty basic machine - only has 2GB RAM total, of which win7 uses around 900mb. zzzz.

That sounds about right for 32 bit without apps open. You can search for pagefile in the start menu search box. I just leave it as system managed. Other than that I can't think of anything else.

Go to crucial's website and download the scanner to check what ram you have. It will also recommend faster and larger ram that your mobo can support.

It is normal for Windows 7 with 2GB RAM. Barely enough for basic installation. Once you run heavy applications like Word or Chrome, it involves pagefile. It doesn't give "out of memory" messages, but pagefile is slow.

Some applications like MS Office preload libraries on boot time. It allows Office to start qucker, but you get hit when using Chrome and other apps. You can remove Office quickstart as workaround. Adding more RAM is a long term solution. Buy it now, as tomorrow DDR2 will cost more.

Sweeet. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Consider it done! More ram it is
