How much RAM are you currently using?
If you're not using more than 3GB at this moment, then I highly doubt that you'll need more than 8GB within the next 3 years or so. 16GB of RAM would be nice to have, because then you can create a RAM drive for temporary files, etc.

How does one go about installing this on Windows 7 64bit? I have 8GB of ram and would like to use like 3 or 4GB of it for something like this.

I'm using RAMDisk at my office to create a 2GB RAM drive.
I then moved my temporary folders (windows's system temp, Firefox & 7-zip) to that RAM drive of mine.

Cool thanks guys, what settings should I use? .I think 2GB will be ok since my entire TEMP folders combined =1GB also what formatting should I use? What I have done so far is formatted the ramdisk to NTFS and changed my windows settings to point to the ramdisk. Anything I'm forgetting?

As far as I can tell it seems to be working, my windows gadget shows that 2 more GB of ram is being used now.

Word of warning: Got a BSOD yesterday while trying to get RAMdisk to work.

Haven't gotten one yet. :)

Anyone have any ideas on how to do this on a Mac?

Only works on Windows sorry, maybe try a different program.

How do I move my windows temp folders over because everytime I do my ramdisk doesn't startup when I restart and to open it I have to move my windows temp folders back to the hard drive.

Also is it possible to change the location of my pagefile over onto the ramdisk, or is that a bad idea?

Thankfully, I don't suffer from that allergy. My first PC was preloaded with DOS 6.22. I learn't how to use DOS and have been apply that knowledge ever since.

My knowledge on Macs is a whole different story. Got a MacBook a month or two ago and i'm learning new stuff every day.

Thanks for that info. Really appreciate it.

I used to play F1GP, in DOS 6.22 on my old 486. I had to make a RAM disk for a telemetry tool. Made a batch file that ran every time I opened F1GP. Worked perfectly.

Since RAM is relatively cheap now, and the amount needed for temp files is small, its a lot more cost effective.

Once you've convinced your OS where to stash stuff maybe. Dunno, just sounds like asking for trouble with a modern (bulky) OS.

Thats the part i'm still investigating. What would be ideal is if I could convince OS X to place all its temp stuff in the RAM drive, and continue doing that after a restart. Only temp files, not the saved files. What i've found so far says that I must place stuff there e.g.. photos, then remove it after editing or it will be lost after rebooting. Might not be worth the effort.

Isn't the page file in use only when you run out of RAM? If so, then writing to a RAM-based page file would probably be slower than just writing straight to RAM.
