Ram for Macbook Pro

I think DDR2 runs up to 800 and DDR3 is 1066, 1333 and 1600

DDR2 is up to 1066. You are right there are a few DDR3 that are 1066 but it's mainly 1333 and up.

*In general. Perhaps Mac specifically makes use of DDR3-1066 more, but it's definitely a lot rarer than DDR2-1066 generally.

... ah, ok, I see DDR3 actually starts from 800. The new iMacs use DDR SO-DIMM's and run them at 1333 ... unless it has to downclock if you install 1066, so I'll definitely get 1333 or 1600 DDR3 SO-DIMM

Never seen those myself, but yeah there are always some funny numbers. :) For the most part though, DDR = 266, 333, 400; DDR2 = 533, 667, 800, 1066; DDR3 = 1333, 1600, 1866, 2000. Yes most Macs I've seen that use DDR3 use 1333MHz. Most laptops too. Cheaper and no performance difference.

Apple wanted R3000 so I was pretty happy with the price after googling for a whole day..... trying to find someone in Durban who sells ram.- shot.

If you really get stuck and want "Apple" ram - look at kalahari.net they have Patriot memory modules which are Apple compatible for under R600 last time I checked

I used crowntech.co.za (ask for KTA-MB1066K2/8G Apple Notebook Memory 8GB Kit) and it cost me about 1K. We have used this now in 3 MacBook Pro's (2010 edition).

Not bad, seen Frontosa has the Corsair 1333Mhz kit for R850 odd

Have not ordered from anyone else, but been pleasantly surprised by Crowntech - good pre- and post-sales and although with two orders they had no stock on hand, it took 2 weeks to have the RAM delivered on site. Good feedback during the waiting period and very professional. Running a MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM and running a number of virtuals and dev-tooling and then still having over 2GB free is something else ;-)

Ordered 8GB DDR3 PC10600 1333MHz from OWC on 23 May 11. Received from Post Office on 01 Jun 11. Cost ZAR 971.00 (modules plus postage) and ZAR146.40 for customs. Modules were well and safely packed with little or no probability of damage en-route.

If required I'll use OWC again.
