Sorry, I don't know much about upcoming Windows 10. I hear Windows 8 (I don't use it, horrible interface) uses RAM better than Windows 7, maybe 10 will be similar to 8. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can help us out.

What OS does the laptop now run?

W7 and W8 did not have a difference in system requirements, don't think W10 will be different, but wait and see.

i heard win10 will be better than win 8, i used win8 pro 64bit on a newer laptop and it runs much faster than mine but also had 2gb ram. im using win 7 pro 64bit

Download Win10 Tech Preview build 9879. Repartion you hard drive to create some space and install Win10 next to win7 to see how it runs. It's much nicer than 7/8/8.1

Just to back myself up, Windows 10 System Requirements:

Processor : 1GHz or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
RAM : 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space : 16GB
Graphics card : Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

New laptop. Definitely new laptop. Just launching Google Chrome and using Hangouts will induce lag. There's just no life in single-core systems for consumers beyond uses like PFSense or custom NAS/general server/media playback.

As long as its laptop memory.

Just take note that when you get anything slower than DDR2 800 CL6, your other 2GB module would then also run at the slower speed (like when you'll install that Transcend 2GB DDR2 667).

You'll still get more performance from having more RAM when its running at a lower clock speed.

yes it is quite expensive nowadays & yes its laptop ram, i can get two of the same so if i add one an replace the already installed ram it should be fine?

My 2c worth? Start saving for a new laptop. With that ancient 4 series Intel chipset, you are missing out on things like USB3, vastly superior graphics, faster system bus and more. Since your CPU there has been Nehalem, Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell and now we are moving to Broadwell.
