OK, I was getting a bit excited about increasing RAM on my machine. Used one of the online scanners just to make sure that I buy a compatible memory. I don't doubt that this message from the scanner is accurate: "According to our scan, your system already has the maximum amount of memory installed."

That's a bit funny?
What's the LIMITING FACTOR here? Why can't I remove the 512MB and install a 2GB in that slot, totaling 4GB???

According to the scanner results even the 512MB is "wasted"? Please explain it to me the way you would a 6 year old. Thanks.

# Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
# Currently Installed Memory: 2.5GB
# Available Memory Slots: 0
# Total Memory Slots: 2
# Dual Channel Support: Yes

/facepalm

So what motherboard do you have? And what Windows are you running. Providing the info from the online scanner is a bit pointless

Providing the info from some random online scanner that you dont even link to is pointless.

Anyway, you can have a max of 4GB RAM. Gigabyte says so. Though XP will limit you to 3.5GB

What's with this, dude?!?!!! I am giving you a fair chance to explain this before I jump to any conclusions...

We need to know what kind of motherboard or version of windows you have to be able to advise you correctly.

For example, Windows 32 bit has a limit of 3.5 gigs

According to new egg the motherboard supports a max of 2gigs but the Gigabyte website says it supports up to 4gigs...

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it... BTW, I mean it. (I don't do sarcasm.)

That still doesn't explain "/facepalm"! Did it occur to you that IF I KNEW what sort of info will be required in order for you guys to help me I WOULD have provided it in the first place!!!??? Please think about that next time...

Hey, I mean it: Thanks for the information.

One, this is just a forum, no need to get worked up over a simple facepalm, which strangely enough is actually my default action when dealing with little children (as you requested) and is usually done in jest too.
Anyway, if it offended you that much then I'm sorry.

That's cool. :) You've got a point... I will have some whiskey in a moment to calm me down.

Here's what I need further advice on:
http://ee.giga-byte.com/products/mb/bios/ga-945gcmx-s2_66.html

Will it be wise to download the "beta" update? I'm thinking of a BIOS update as per kayvee's advice. Any pitfalls I should look out for when updating?

How can is check if my "512MB" is currently in use or not? (Again, a six year old's question... ONLY this time I promise to take whatever "punishment" meted out like a man... or is it a boy? :D)

If I were you I would rather use the English international version of the Gigabyte website, found here.
.

BIOS updating is reasonably straight forward on the Gigabyte motherboards. Further information on this and the pitfalls is found on the Downloads > BIOS page.

Personally I always prefer to keep my BIOS up to date, but it depends on how comfortable you are in doing it, but it is a simple enough task.

Yeah, I would go with the beta, it's been in beta for ages, and if there were major problems they would have pulled it.

PS Do the BIOS update before the whiskey ;)

Right click "My Computer", go to properties, and hey presto total system RAM is the last thing shown on that tab.

Thanks Archer. That's where I checked before I even started this thread. What confused me is what the guys said about my motherboard supporting a max of 2Gig. So I wondered why XP was reporting 2.5Gig while the max supported is 2Gig.
This made me think perhaps XP is reporting "RAM installed" NOT necessarily what the OS is actually "using." I hope this makes sense...
Anyway, I am thinking of getting another 2Gig. My thinking is: if the board is already supporting 2.5Gig though some indications are 2Gig is max... Surely replacing 512MB with 2Gig won't hurt?
