It is tradition here on myBb to blame every drop of the Rand on the guvmint. Yet at the same time ignoring the strengthening of other currencies and their attached economic data.

When the Rand goes up against other currencies , then it is always attributed to weakening of the other currency...not a strengthening of the Rand.

what exactly will make the Rand stronger? It may gain a bit because of a weaker US$. And if it becomes stronger, the mines will get less for their gold. And will have to get rid of more miners. And we all know where that will go.

Those two positions aren't exclusive. The Rands weakness to the dollar is a combination of dollar strength and rand weakness due to each others socio-political and economic data.

The rand is also weaker than other emerging market currencies that are tied to commodities on a relative basis.

Since when is that a problem, the dollar is the global currency so they'll print a couple billion more as they need it. In fact do they even need the physical bills anymore?

I think we tried to explain the part where SA mines were exporting way less than they usually did and as the mines started to recover the rand would strengthen....... /Wise words from a boozer!
