A few of my overseas friends and I have wagered a bet.

They bet that after Mbeki speech the rand will fall at least R0.50

I'm waiting for tomorrow to see who wins this bet.

Doesnt exactly take much for our rand to fall! But I think it will actually remain stable, anyway you will know by late this afternoon

Depreciation due to bad news usually happens quickly. You shouldn't need to wait.

I hope it does I need to send a friend some cash in the UK
You want it to depreciate or appreciate?

South Africa is still building its economy so the currency is somewhat unstable. But overall the country's currency is subject to the same factors as that of every other country.

IMO the RAND is stabilizing over the past few weeks:

Factors that should have had an effect

1) The strengthening of the Euro against the dollar, although the Euro won ground over the dollar, the Rand seemed unchanged.
2) The 25 billion rand Edcon (Edgars) takeover.
3) The speech of Mbeki, although 50c is a bit harsh.
