Damn, I'm in your area, so will probably be next, but at the moment still flowing, I guess not for much longer

It wouldn't surprise me if, like the power stations, the water plants are now also ****ed because of a lack of foresite and basic maintenance!
About ten years ago we had to do some projects involving water treatment plants and even back then it was obvious that not enough money was being spent on maintenance, upgrades etc. In recent years places like Bloemfontein and Kimberley have been without water for days, the reasons being quite obvious.
In the longer term this is going to be a far bigger problem than the power shortages of a few years ago.

Water restored to most Gauteng suburbs
Water has been restored to most areas of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni following shortages during the week.
Only two suburbs in Johannesburg -- South Hills and Rabie Ridge -- and two areas in Ekurhuleni -- Bedfordview and Primrose -- still had water shortages.
"There has been a very big improvement," Ekurhuleni city spokesman Themba Gadebe said on Thursday.
"In Bedfordview and Primrose there is still a shortage of water because they are high-lying areas. We are struggling with them. But in all other areas, water has been restored."
To help with the problem, Gadebe said water had been diverted from two other reservoir systems. He could not say when water supply would be back to normal in the two suburbs.
Johannesburg Water spokeswoman Millicent Kabwe said South Hills and Rabie Ridge were still without water.
"In all other areas water has been restored. Every day and every hour the situation improves. I can't say when they will get water. I can't give an exact date and time."
Rand Water spokesman Justice Mohale said the level of water in its reservoirs had improved overnight.
"The Meredale reservoir is at 41 percent today from yesterday's late afternoon figure of 39 percent," he said.
The Waterval reservoir was 39 percent full late on Wednesday, and by 6am on Thursday it was 47 percent full.

It feels like water shortages, major burst pipes, etc are going to start becoming common place like the crisis developing with electricity. The exception is that we cannot do without water for as long as we can electricity. We can make alternate arrangements for electricity. We cannot with water.

Bunch of liars. The DA must get access to these reservoirs to check what is going on. If it takes a week to fill up, it also takes a while to drain, why was this situation allowed to deteriorate over weeks with no intervention? It seems everything the cANCer is responsible for must be triple checked.

Rand Water on Thursday denied reports of water restrictions in Gauteng following water shortages during the week.
"They got it wrong. It's not water restrictions," Rand Water spokesman Justice Mohale said.
"We are assessing the situation. For those areas that have enough water, we want to redirect some of it to areas that do not have water. We want to build water levels to help those struggling areas."
High-lying areas, such as Bedfordview and Primrose, still had water shortages because there was not enough pressure to push water there. As water levels increase, there would be enough pressure to pump water to those areas.
"There must be enough pressure to push water to certain areas, so high-lying areas is a problem."
He said the diversion of water could take some time.
"It may take a short time to fill those reservoirs, it may take hours."
Earlier, authorities said water had been restored to most of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

And now the water has gone off in Pretoria East, which is not fed by one of the affected pump stations. Was waiting for the moment when they would divert the water to somewhere else.

Apparently (according to the radio), the low-lying areas are getting water but not the areas on hillsAnyway, I am sure it has some scientific explanation, like gravity or somesuch.
It is called water pressure. Meaning that the water is forced down via gravity from a reservoir into a smaller pipe. Due to the weight of the water in the reservoir, force is applied, so the water further down the pipe can be forced upwards. So. If the reservoir is full, more pressure applies. This is the reason why most reservoirs are also build on top of hills.
If there isn't enough water in the reservoir, the low lying areas will still get water, but there isn't enough pressure to push the water upwards, so the high lying areas are screwed.
